Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Conventional Arms Branch of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (CAB/UNODA). The Political Affairs Officer will report to the Deputy Chief of Branch. The incumbent will provide substantive and procedural support to implement the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management, established by General assembly resolution 78/47 “Through-life conventional ammunition management, which will address existing gaps in through-life ammunition management, including international cooperation and assistance, at the national, subregional, regional and global levels. The incumbent will further contribute to the strengthening of the UN SaferGuard Programme, which is the UN’s knowledge management platform on conventional ammunition issues. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect thematic disarmament and arms control mandates for which the staff member is responsible. • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of disarmament and arms control, with focus on conventional ammunition management and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in the Secretariat. • Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to senior officials and Regional Centers. • Provides technical and substantive support in the implementation of mandates of the branch. • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters related to conventional ammunition management. • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of project activities, monitors project implementation, drafts and reviews relevant documents and reports, identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions, liaises with relevant parties, identifies and tracks follow-up actions. • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations in the area of conventional ammunition management. • Provides substantive and procedural support to meetings, workshops, events, and promotes policy through outreach activities. • Prepares reports and provides inputs to relevant publications and other documents, and makes presentations on behalf of ODA. • Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions. • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other related duties as required. EducationAdvanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. A minimum of 2 years of experience in conventional arms and ammunition control in relation to the global framework for through-life conventional ammunition management or related area is required. Experience in programme management is desirable. 2 Years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
