Setting and ReportingThe position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General (OASG) of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 (IIIM) located in Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent of the position reports to the Head of Entity (ASG). ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Reviews and monitors activities in the Middle East with specific focus on Syria; assesses trends which might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues, particularly as they relate to the Syrian transition process. • Analyses political and related events within assigned area with a view to provide early warning advice to the Head of Entity; provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters and country or regional issues and makes recommendations on actions to take. • Prepares reports and papers on sensitive and high profile matters of concern to the Head of Entity; drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches, reports and other correspondence for the Head of Entity. • Acts as focal point on key thematic issues and assists in the formulation of advice and strategy, particularly in relation to new and emerging threats and challenges to peace and security. • Maintains contacts and liaises with other United Nations departments, agencies and programs at Headquarters. • Maintains contacts and deepens partnerships with other sectors of the UN, other international and regional organizations, Member States, and civil society organizations on coordination and policy matters; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations. • Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise. • Performs other related duties as required. Work ExperienceA minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. A minimum of three years' experience working on issues related to the Middle East region, including developing policy recommendations is required. Experience in multilateral negotiations and working with member states in the context of UN intergovernmental processes, particularly in the General Assembly and Security Council, is required. Experience in drafting politically sensitive documents and reports is required. Experience with a specific focus on Syria is desirable. Experience in UN Coordination and post-conflict peacebuilding, recovery, and transition planning is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the official working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required.
