You are applying to the ILO generic internship roster, which is published twice per year.         Department(s)

        The Employment Policy, Job Creation and Livelihoods Department (EMPLOYMENT) is responsible for promoting full and productive employment by developing integrated employment, development and skills policies that maximize the employment impact of economic growth, investment, and development and which are inclusive, gender sensitive, productive and sustainable. Guided by relevant Conventions and Recommendations, the Department develops new approaches and policy tools and disseminates them through policy advisory, capacity building and technical cooperation activities in a range of inter-related areas at global level and across countries and regions. The Department delivers on its mandate through work in three Branches: Skills and Employability; Employment and Labour Markets Policies; and Employment in Investments.

        The position is located in the Skills and Employability Branch (SKILLS) within the Employment Policy, Job Creation and Livelihoods Department (EMPLOYMENT). EMPLOYMENT is responsible for promoting full and productive employment by developing integrated employment, development and skills policies that maximize the employment impact of economic growth, investment and development and which are inclusive, gender sensitive, productive and sustainable. Guided by relevant Conventions and Recommendations and by conclusions of committee discussions in the International Labour Conference, the Department develops new approaches, and policy tools and disseminates them through policy advisory, capacity building and technical cooperation activities in a range of inter-related areas at the global and country levels.

        The SKILLS Branch assists governments and the social partners in reviewing and reforming their vocational education and training systems, policies and institutions in the context of fast changes in the labour market due to digitalization, climate change, trade, migration and demographic changes. It supports ILO field offices in the development and implementation of skills and employability development components of Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCPs). Its mandate is to enable constituents to improve skills development and lifelong learning so as to improve the employability of workers, the productivity of enterprises and the inclusiveness of economic growth, and advance social justice.

        Learning areas

        As an intern in the Work Group on Skills Policy, Systems and Digitalisation in the SKILLS Branch, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas related to skills development, youth employability and lifelong learning (LLL). The work will entail tasks such as:

        • Support the design and implementation of high-level policy guidance documents to support Member States in applying and adapting ILO policy frameworks and international labour standards on skills for employment to their circumstances and integrating skills development into their employment strategies and policies as part of a comprehensive employment framework.
        • Assist in comparative analysis of national skills, youth employability and lifelong learning policies and strategies
        • Support in carrying out high-quality research products, new tools, methodologies and guidance documents to promote skilling, reskilling and upskilling of youth and workers to enable their smooth transitions (including from school to work, informality to formality and work to work).
        • Assist in the work related to digital and green transformation of skills and TVET systems and programmes.
        • Support in developing strategies on financing skills development.
        • Support the inclusion of persons with disabilities in education, training and employment.
        • Support the skills recognition of migrants and refugees.
        • Assist in developing communication materials.
        • Assist identifying and documenting best practices and lessons learned.
        • Participate in workshops and seminars and prepare reports and presentations.
        • Assist in other tasks related to the Branch.
        • Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

        Education

        First level degree in Economic or Social Sciences, Human Resource Development, Development Studies, International Relations or a similar field.

        The candidate must be enrolled at least in a Master's degree programme or must have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

        Experience

        Relevant professional experience in skills and lifelong learning, communication, good knowledge of social media, communication apps, Word, Excel and PPP.

        Languages

        Proficiency in English. In addition, the candidate having proficiency in at least one of the other official languages of the ILO (French, Spanish) would have an advantage.

        • Good analytical and drafting skills.
        • Ability to produce high-quality written materials, including graphically-based PowerPoint presentations as well as text documents.
        • Good communication skills and be able to work in a team.
        • Collaborative spirit, ability to work effectively in a team, being able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy.
        • Strong time management skills with an ability to plan, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines.
        • Self-motivated and able to work with autonomy.
        • Ability to work in an international, a multicultural and multilingual environment with gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory behaviour and attitude.

        Selection process:

        Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

        If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

        Stipend/Financial compensations:

        As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

        Qualified candidates from non- and under- represented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for round-trip airfare (economy class) in addition to the stipend.

        Insurance:

        Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
