  The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 
  In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
  a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities; b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor. d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
  Background Information

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Cameroon seeks to strengthen the effectiveness, coherence, and impact of its internal and external communication activities. This comes in a context marked by:

  • The need to update visibility and awareness-raising tools;
  • Specific challenges related to communication during electoral periods and in crisis-affected areas (North-West and South-West);
  • The importance of better structuring internal communication channels to optimize information flow and responsiveness in emergency situations.

    It is therefore essential to carry out a thorough analysis and establish practical recommendations. Supervision

    • Under the direct supervisor of the Digital and Communication Assistant, the incumbent shall have the following specific objectives: Learning Objectives

      1. Branding and Visibility Tools

    • Update the display plan for key messages and visibility tools.
    • Identify strategic locations (offices, vehicles, public spaces) to maximize message impact.
    • Determine the format and content of materials (e.g., posters, panels, stickers) for priority messages on:
    • Fraud prevention;
    • Anti-retaliation;
    • Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA).

      2. External Communication in Sensitive Contexts

    • Define approaches and tools to:
    • Give visibility to activities in the North-West and South-West while safeguarding staff security and maintaining institutional neutrality.
    • Align communication with the government’s position (identifying whether an official or implicit stance exists).
    • Support fundraising and resource mobilization communication strategy development.
    • Highlight donor contributions in these areas.
    • Leveraging digital tools to reach potential donors and partners.
    • Propose adapted formats: internal publications, short videos, event flyers, secure visual content for donor sharing.

      3. Communication During Electoral Periods

    • Analyse the United Nations system’s strategy during electoral periods and determine IOM’s appropriate positioning.
    • Identify communication opportunities and limitations in this context, including risk management.

      4. Internal Communication

    • Assess existing internal channels (e.g., IN, MEMU) and their effectiveness.
    • Define a crisis communication protocol (decision chains, reaction timelines, template messages);
    • Determine the optimal rhythm of exchanges, best days/times, and preferred channels according to message types (operational, urgent, awareness-raising).

       

      3. Proposed Methodology

    • Desk review of existing communication plans, UN guidelines, and IOM internal policies; benchmarking. 
    • Interviews and consultations with:
    • IOM staff (operational, communication, security, IT);
    • Key donors;
    • Government and UN system representatives.
    • Comparative analysis with practices from other IOM missions in similar contexts.
    • Mapping of existing tools, messages, and channels.

      4. Expected Deliverables

    • Analytical report including:
    • Detailed situation analysis by thematic area.
    • Identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT).
    • Operational recommendations plan, prioritized by feasibility.
    • Updated branding plan and positioning of key messages.
    • Practical guide for internal and external communication (including in sensitive contexts and during electoral periods).

      5. Duration and Indicative Timeline

    • Total period: 12 weeks
    • Phase 1: Information gathering and analysis (4 weeks)
    • Phase 2: Development of deliverables (2 weeks)
    • Phase 3: Internal validation and dissemination (6 weeks)

      6. Resources and Expected Support

    • Access to internal documents and existing communication tools.
    • Facilitation of interviews with stakeholders.

      The candidate should:

    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of Bachelor’s degree/ Master’s level or equivalent in an accredited academic institution of Communication, Public relation, Social Sciences, Political Science, journalism, or any relevant discipline;
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • or have graduated with a university degree (not later than 1 year ago) in an accredited academic institution of Communication, Public relation, Social Sciences, Political Science, journalism, or any relevant discipline.   Skills
    • Good knowledge of communication strategies and tools (internal and external)
    • Proficiency with digital tools and communication materials (posters, videos, flyers, visual content, etc.)
    • Ability to analyze and improve existing communication plans
    • Strong report writing and practical guide drafting skills
    • Ability to conduct interviews and consultations with various stakeholders (staff, donors, government and UN representatives)
    • Understanding of communication challenges in sensitive contexts (crisis, elections, security, etc.)
    • Familiarity with benchmarking, monitoring, and comparative analysis
    • Strong organizational and time management skills (ability to meet deadlines, plan over 12 weeks)
    • Initiative and autonomy in carrying out assignments
    • Ability to work collaboratively with different teams
    • Discretion and respect for confidentiality, especially in sensitive contexts
    • Experience or knowledge of the humanitarian sector or UN system
    • Ability to adapt communication to multicultural and multilingual contexts
    • Sensitivity to security and institutional neutrality issues. Languages

      The intern should be able to communicate in both the English and French languages. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
