Work LocationBeirut, Lebanon Expected duration3 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational setting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For nearly 40 years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements worldwide, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns and cities of all sizes. Background After the 2006 July War, UN-Habitat initiated its Country Programme in Lebanon, responding to emerging issues through housing reconstruction, shelter provision, and upgrading of basic services, while laying the foundation for long-term sustainable solutions by means of urban profiling, data collection and urban policy analyses, supporting municipalities and much more. UN-Habitat Lebanon has been working effectively with partners and urban planning actors at the community, national and international levels for the past 19 years to develop and implement programmes and interventions that contribute to the achievement of the urban dimensions of the2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in line with the country’s needs and humanitarian and development frameworks. UN-Habitat Lebanon continuously adapts to the country’s situation by fostering inclusive and sustainable urban development, improving planning systems and frameworks as well as effective urban crises response – through a humanitarian, development and peace nexus approach. This has included contributing to the collective response of the United Nations to the Syrian displacement crisis, the protracted socioeconomic and financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Beirut Port explosion, the post-October 2023 conflict with Israel, and other related needs. UN-Habitat Lebanon is currently implementing a range of projects and initiatives involving data collection and analysis, data visualization, information management at large, and other related tasks. These include, but are not limited to, damage assessments; housing, land and property rights issues; land governance; climate change; solid waste management; master plan development; etc. To support the timely implementation of these projects and initiatives, UN-Habitat seeks the services of a qualified Urban Analyst (Individual Contractor). Reporting line The Individual Contractor will work under the supervision of the OiC Head of Country Programme. Duties and responsibilities The assignment of the Urban Analysis Assistant (Individual Contractor) will extend over a period of 3 months, from 5 January 2026 till 4 April 2026. The Individual Contractor will be involved in different UN-Habitat projects and initiatives that include data collection and analysis, review of reports, coordination with local partners, and related tasks by providing the following support: • Support the design and development of assessment and analysis tools and methodologies relevant to the Lebanese context, including drafting and review of questionnaires. • Support the preparation and implementation of relevant field assessments to collect different types of (quantitative, qualitative and mapped) data on various themes, in coordination with local authorities, alongside relevant colleagues, including area coordinators, community mobilizers, GIS/IM coordinators, and field surveyors. • Assist in compiling and conducting desk review(s) of data and reports/literature on cities, neighborhoods, and vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons, and poor Lebanese. • Support in conducting field visits related to data collection and verification. • Contribute to the development and review of high-quality information products, such as reports, maps, dashboards, infographics and other graphic products, including those summarizing the findings of and recommendations emanating from different assessments conducted as part of various UN-Habitat projects. • Assist in preparing and organizing capacity development sessions, training workshops, and meetings involving different audiences, and provide the needed documentation for these events. • Take part in meetings and coordination/networking efforts with partners/relevant stakeholders related to urban data collection, analysis, and related issues, maintaining a close working relationship with relevant counterparts in partner agencies and organizations. • Assist in preparing periodic reports for project monitoring and donor reports and documentation processes. • Assist in preparing project concept notes and proposals that include urban data collection, visualization, analysis and related components. Qualifications/special skillsA high school degree with supplementary training in urban planning, architecture, or equivalent/related fields is required. • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience, with a focus on urban development or related topics, is required. • Proven skills and strong experience in urban research/analysis and in applying relevant methodologies are required. • Strong report drafting and review skills are required. • Understanding of urban information management and data visualization, including mapping, is required. • Ability to work on AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat is required. • Previous experience in a United Nations agency or in the humanitarian/development field is an advantage.
