Mission and objectivesThe UNDP mission in São Tomé and Príncipe is to eradicate poverty and inequality, build resilience, and promote sustainable development by supporting public policies, economic empowerment, and renewable energy, with the aim of achieving the country's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

ContextThe energy sector in São Tomé and Príncipe faces a series of structural challenges that compromise the country's economic and social development. Extreme dependence on (imported) fossil fuels for electricity production results in high operating costs, uncompetitive tariffs, and constant supply constraints. This reality is even more acute in rural and remote areas, where access to electricity is low, directly affecting the population's quality of life and limiting opportunities for economic growth. In this context, the implementation of low-carbon mini-grids emerges as an important practical and urgent contribution, aligned with São Tomé and Príncipe's Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly regarding universal access to energy and climate change mitigation. The project, part of the Africa Mini-Grids Program (AMP) with support from the UNDP and funding from the GEF, aims to create the technical, institutional, and financial conditions necessary to transform the way electrification in general is conducted in the country, with a focus on rural areas, paving the way for sustainable and replicable investments throughout the national territory.
