Job Description

Your responsibilities

As a Survey Engineer you will join the Geodetic Metrology group at CERN, where you will take part in the metrology and alignment of a wide variety of components used in the particle accelerators. You will be using state-of-the-art surveying tools and software to achieve the sub-millimetre accuracy necessary to achieve our goals.

This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate on two major projects and contribute to the efforts of the Geodetic Metrology team in the North Area.
The SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) complex is being prepared for a significant upgrade through the North Area Consolidation (NA-CONS) and High Intensity ECN3 (HI-ECN3) projects.
The NA-CONS project will continue with the extension of the geodetic network and the synchronization of beam trajectory across the survey database, layout database, and the definitions provided by the beam physicists. One of the milestones of the project is the installation phase planned for the long shutdown (LS3) starting early 2026.

In this role, you will:

take part in the preparation, planning and survey work related to the long shutdown;Develop and validate measurement for a target that will become increasingly radioactive over time for a new Beam Dump Facility (BDF) for the Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment; Integrate your solutions into the Technical Design Report (TDR) of the facility, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

Knowledge and application of high-precision survey methods and tools: laser tracker, optical and digital levels, total station;Knowledge and practice of standard compensation software: theories, concepts and algorithms related to the least square adjustments; Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
