Are you a recent graduate in Materials Science? Then join us in a place that can be hotter than the centre of the sun, and colder than the vacuum of space, at the very same time. This is the smartest way to learn more than you can imagine and see your work travel at the speed of light. Almost. This is the fastest way to give your career momentum. This is your Origin. Where your career begins. Take part!
The recent upgrade of several particle accelerators in Europe involved the manufacturing of large (up to 2 meters size) components, which were often built in stainless steel for its structural properties, and subsequently plated with copper to achieve a high electrical conductivity of the surface. CERN produced several such parts and the respective R&D, either for accelerators on-site or in collaboration with external institutes. In 2024 a specific project, requiring the application of this technology as well as the experience gained so far, will start.
The Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings (VSC) group is in charge of the design, construction, operation, maintenance and development of the entire CERN vacuum systems. In this context it includes the facilities for thin film coating, surface finishing and vacuum related characterization.
As a Surface Finishing Technical Engineer in the VSC group you will be in charge of a copper plating line after a training period, and you will:
Follow the components from reception to shipping and record all production control steps;Perform the plating process;Apply the production related quality control procedures;Perform the plating line related maintenance;Perform specialised surface finishing work as precision cleaning for components for vacuum applications, etching, electroplating and electroforming on prototype and series parts for the CERN acceleratorsDocument your work by written procedures and presentations;Participate in the maintenance, monitoring and QA of the workshop;Participate in the development of new processes, including the use of simulation tools, characterisation and implementation in the context of new CERN projects.Who we are looking for
