The United Nations University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) was established in 2003 in Bonn, Germany. The institute conducts research work focusing on advancing human security and well-being by addressing present and future risks arising from environmental hazards and climate change. The IPCC WGIII, Ch. 8 “Services and Demand” chapter
As an IPCC AR7 Lead Author, the Deputy Director and her team are reviewing and assessing current scientific evidence on services and demands related to climate change mitigation. The IPCC WGIII “Services and Demand chapter” will examine human needs, aspirations, inclusive well-being, development, and social dimensions of climate change mitigation.
Under the authority of the Deputy Director, UNU-EHS and the director supervision of the Research Manager - Scientific support to the Deputy Director, the student assistant will be entrusted with the following tasks:
Research & Qualitative Data Analysis Support
Support literature reviews on the state of the art of “Services and Demand” in relation to climate change mitigation;
Code and conduct thematic analysis of qualitative results from the literature review;
Prepare thematic summaries and support the identification of key narratives across the research topics;
Assist in developing visual representation of findings, including graphs, and theme maps;
Draft knowledge products including, internal summaries, and presentation material;
Participate in internal research discussions, take notes, and help structure outputs as required.
2. Knowledge Management & Learning
Contribute to background research for the “Services and Demand” chapter of upcoming IPCC publication, in line with guidance from the Deputy Director;
Support the processing and organization of literature review using an IPCC-designated reference management system;
Assist with the layout, editing, and proofreading of research outputs.
3. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
· Timely and quality collection, synthesis and generation of scientific information, knowledge outputs and visuals;
· Quality and level of engagement with the research team to foster collaboration and ensure timely progress on deliverables;
· Contribution to project, institute and UNU mission.

1) Education and certification
· Enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Geography, Environmental Sciences or Climate Change related subjects.
2) Required skills and experience
· Demonstrated experience in qualitative data analysis and literature reviews;
· Proficiency with reference management software (e.g. Citavi or similar) is required;
· Excellent command of written English, strong writing and synthesis skills;
· High attention to detail and ability to organize findings thematically;
· Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate within a virtual research team;
· Experience with qualitative data analysis software, preferably MAXQDA or similar, is an asset;
· Familiarity with visual presentation of research is an asset.
3) Language Requirements
Fluency in English is required.
The successful candidate will be retained under a Consultant Contract (CTC). Consultants engaged by UNU may not provide services for more than twenty-four (24) months in a thirty-six (36) month period.
UNU is not liable for any taxes that may be levied on the remuneration you receive under this contract. Payment of any such taxes remains the sole responsibility of CTC holders.
Remuneration will be commensurate with experience.
Should “mission travel” be required, UNU will pay for travel. However, this will be subject to the following prerequisites: Medical Clearance, Security Clearance through the Travel Request Information Process (TRIP) system, completion of the BSAFE online course, travel Visa, and liability waiver. Trip prerequisites will be met at the expense of the consultant.
Travel cost will be calculated based on economy class travel, regardless of the length of travel. Costs for accommodation, meals and incidentals must not exceed applicable daily subsistence allowance (DSA) rates, as promulgated by the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC at http://icsc.un.org).
