The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Solomon Islands implements a range of national and regional projects aimed at addressing migration challenges and delivering increased protection and assistance to vulnerable populations in partnership with government, civil society, other United Nations (UN) partners, regional bodies, and private sector counterparts. 

Through research, policy interventions, capacity building and outreach, these projects aim to develop sustainable solutions to reduce systemic vulnerabilities, to strengthen coordination frameworks and mechanisms, and to provide increased support to vulnerable populations, including victims of trafficking, exploited and abused migrants, and those displaced, or at risk of being displaced, by disasters.

Under the overall supervision and the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the Senior Project Assistant (MECC) will be responsible and accountable for providing administrative and logistical support to the implementation and monitoring of programming related to disaster displacements and strengthening resilience against disaster and climate change related fragility in the Solomon Islands.

  1. Following direction provided by the Project Manager, support the implementation of programming related to Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC), Emergencies and Post Crisis (EPC), and disaster displacement preparedness and response, including the implementation of the financial, logistical, administrative, and technical aspects in accordance with IOM’s policies.
  2.  Support project implementation according to the work plan and document results of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation programming.
  3. Coordinate with project staff to facilitate community consultations and discussions across provinces, including supporting the implementation of focus group discussions and key informant interviews with community members.
  4. Promote and contribute to the integration and mainstreaming of gender, protection, and human rights, particularly in the context of evacuation, shelters and disaster risk management.
  5. As requested by the Project Manager, participate in select meetings, workshops and events, and prepare relevant reports or minutes accordingly.
  6. In compliance with project visibility guidelines, assist with the production and dissemination of communication materials to document project activities, achievements and impacts.
  7. Under the supervision of the Project Manager, support to organize and deliver capacity building activities, including on Evacuation Center Management & Displacement (ECMD), to build capacity of staff, partners, government officials and other humanitarian actors.
  8. As requested by the Project Manager, coordinate with Government (National and Provincial), International Non-Government Organizations (INGOs), NGOs, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Academia to implement project activities.
  9. Coordinate logistical and technical preparation of key documents, including assistance in preparation and dispatch of letters of invitation, receipt of confirmations, sourcing of venues and food and beverage services.
  10. Undertake skills development and training as required in order to enhance professional and technical capacities.
  11. Perform other related duties as may be assigned. Education
    • University degree in Political or Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Relations or Law from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience; or
    • High School diploma with seven years of relevant professional experience Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.   Experience
      • Experience in providing administrative and logistical support to the implementation of projects or programming.
      • Experience in facilitating training, knowledge sharing, and learning events.
      • Experience in liaising with relevant government authorities, including the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Disaster Management (MECDM), the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), as well as relevant provincial government counterparts and the UN will be considered a distinct advantage.
      • Experience in working on disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities at the community level (specifically in the provinces).
      • Experience and understanding of the migration and mobility context in Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific region will be considered a distinct advantage. Skills
        • Excellent writing skills, including an ability to analyse and present information concisely to diverse audiences.
        • Proven skills in disaster displacement and preparedness response.
        • Proven skills in external communications and supporting community discussions.
        • Capacity for creative thinking.
        • Team-oriented, but with capacity to work independently and with minimal supervision.
        • Personal commitment, efficiency and flexibility.
        • Strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to deliver under tight timelines.
        • Understanding of IOM policies, procedures and institutional tools will be considered an advantage. Languages
          • For this position, fluency in English and of Solomon Islands Pidgin is required (oral and written).
          • Working knowledge of additional local languages of the Solomon Islands is an advantage. IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
