1.     Organizational Context

 

a.        Organizational Setting

 

The post is located in the Copyright Management Division (CMD) of the Copyright and Creative Industries Sector (CCIS). CMD proposes policy objectives, designs and executes programs and activities for the establishment, and strengthening of copyright management systems.  Working closely with Governments, professional organizations and other stakeholders, the Division provides advisory services, technical assistance and IT solutions.  The Division also leads and implements public-private partnerships, including the Accessible Books Consortium and WIPO for Creators.

 

b.        Purpose Statement

 

The main role of the incumbent is to lead on creative industry rights management and infrastructure strategies and initiatives. Notably, the incumbent is responsible for: (i) the development of content on the creative industries for various CCIS products, projects and initiatives; and (ii) copyright infrastructure initiatives, including in relation to Artificial Intelligence (AI). The incumbent also contributes to other projects and initiatives in cross-cutting collaboration with CMD colleagues, the Copyright Law Division (CLD), the Regional and National Development Sector (RNDS), as well as other units of the Organization.

 

c.        Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Director, CMD, and in close cooperation with the Senior Manager, Collective Rights Management Team, the Senior Product and Project Manager, WIPO for Creators, and the Director, IP and Frontier Technologies Division.

 

 

2.     Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

 

a.  Lead on the formulation and implementation of strategies and initiatives in support of copyright and related rights management and infrastructure frameworks and solutions for sustainable growth in the creative industries, in close collaboration with CMD’s Collective Rights Management Team, the Copyright Law Division, and other relevant units of the Organization;

 

b.  Monitor and analyze creative industry rights management and infrastructure business models and legal, licensing and data frameworks, in order to provide advice and support to the Director, CMD;

 

c.  Map and analyze initiatives aimed at operationalizing the licensing and opting out of protected content used by AI language models, products and services, in close collaboration with the IP and Frontier Technologies Division;

 

d.  Organize meetings and undertake projects to foster information exchange, knowledge sharing and dialogue on initiatives aimed at operationalizing the licensing and opting out of protected content used by AI language models, products and services, in close collaboration with the IP and Frontier Technologies Division;

 

e.  Contribute to the development of content on the creative industries and especially creators for various CCIS products, projects and initiatives, including WIPO for Creators’ CLIP platform, in close coordination with colleagues in charge of these products, projects and initiatives ;

 

f.   Develop outreach activities and entertain excellent relations with creative industry stakeholders, creators, Member States and inter-governmental organizations;

 

g.  Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.     Requirements

 

Education (Essential)

Advanced university degree in economics, business administration, finance, law or a related field. A relevant first-level university degree plus two years of additional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

 

Experience (Essential)

At least seven years of professional experience in the creative industries in strategic positions, including experience in copyright or related rights management and infrastructure, content production and licensing, and project management.

 

Experience with technological solutions, repositories, standards and metadata facilitating the licensing of protected content.

 

Experience (Desirable)

Experience working in a leadership position for a creative industry company or business organization.

 

Experience working as a creator and monetizing creations.

 

Experience with and understanding of results-based management.

 

Language (Essential)

Excellent knowledge of English.

 

Language (Desirable)

Knowledge of other UN official languages.

 

Job Related Competencies (Essential)

Excellent knowledge of the creative industries and copyright and related rights licensing opportunities and challenges.

 

Good understanding of creative industries' opportunities and challenges for licensing and opting out of protected content used by AI language models, products and services.
