Work LocationUN-House ESCWA Expected duration4 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground: Addressing road safety challenges requires local governments to have adequate technical and financial capacity. However, many countries, particularly in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean Region, face barriers such as a lack of expertise in safer road design, vehicle safety, and post-crash systems. These regions have been slow to address road safety, with a focus on car-oriented policies that prioritize highways, high speeds, and urban sprawl. There are also issues like limited data, poor enforcement, insufficient resources, outdated regulations, and inadequate policies. Road safety is a major public health issue, especially for vulnerable groups. While national-level interventions are often prioritized, cities play a crucial role in implementing projects, improving public transport, and promoting road safety. To address these challenges, the proposed Alliance of Cities for Road Safety (ACRoS) aims to facilitate capacity building, technical support, and city-to-city exchange. The project seeks to help cities implement local solutions, reduce fatalities, and contribute to climate goals, with a focus on the \"Safe System Approach. Duties and Responsibilities: The service of the Individual contractor, Project assistant, is needed to assist in the pitch Project proposal on Road Safety and in the implementation of the Project activities. • Research, compiles, analyses, summarizes, and presents basic information/data related to activities on Road Safety issues in the Arab region. • Liaise with production co and suggest editing. • Systematically follows through and retrieves, highlights and compiles information on Road Safety in the Arab region from a wide variety of information sources; prepares inputs on the subject as required. • Participate in the delivery of required activities on Road Safety policies. • Prepare statistical tables and graphs and assist in the preparation of presentations and background substantive material on Road Safety related deliverables. • Undertake specific analyses on selected subjects related to Road Safety. • Follow up the implementation of the project proposal. • Assist in Project management tasks. • Translates from English to Arabic and vice versa upon request. • Assist in administrative tasks related to workshop preparations and logistics. • Assist in drafting routine correspondences. Qualifications/special skillsA Master degree in economics, management, business administration or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 4 years of professional work experience in the field of research is required. Knowledge of Transport & road safety issue is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic and English is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
