International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer II - Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture on behalf of Worldfish to support the work package leader and the Scientist based in Kenya to achieve the research activities of work package 2 in Kenya. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team of experts with diverse backgrounds, including aquaculture, fish nutrition, production systems, gender, climate change, scaling of innovations, science communication, rural development, and bioprocesses. The candidate will focus on supporting high-quality applied research in the design and implementation of IMTA systems, with emphasis on assessing coastal aquaculture and mariculture technologies, practices, production, and markets, analysing the current constraints and the opportunities for sustainable production in integrated aquaculture value chains, establishing technical and economic baselines of target communities and identifying and scaling the best combinations for integrated seawater Farming of Finfish-Bivalves-Seaweed in target communities.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR Research Centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Responsibilities

Lead the planning, design, implementation, and report on the technical, environmental, and economic aspects of IMTA in collaboration with the Work package lead, Scientists, and Project Leader of the BlueTech Superhighway project Lead the preparation of presentations for workshops, conferences, meetings and papers for scientific publications and management documents. Collect data and conduct data analysis in Kenya and support with related activities. Contribute to the achievement of the research deliverables of work package 2 of the BlueTech Superhighway project through the design and implementation of research and development activities in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Publish technical and outreach articles and support the publication of technical briefs and scientific articles. Collaborate and integrate with scientists for database development, data validation, data cleaning and data quality checks (STATA/ SPSS and Ms. Excel) in support of work package 2 research. Conduct capacity development for students and partners on data collection, curation, data quality, archiving & sharing. Lead the writing of progress reports in collaboration with relevant internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

MSc in aquaculture, aquaculture production systems, sustainable aquaculture, aquaculture economics or related fields At least 5 years of relevant experience in the design and implementation of research activities, including several years in the development and execution of surveys and related data analyses, preferably within a research organization or international NGO. Demonstrated background in developing and implementing data analysis and in the publication of technical briefs and outreach articles. Ability to work within interdisciplinary research teams, linking own expertise to other fields, including human nutrition, value chains, climate change, scaling, and gender research fields. Proven ability to develop and maintain a professional network in the field of IMTA research. Logical thinking, strong analytical and mathematical skills, with excellent attention to detail. Motivation for high-quality science and delivery of impact from research. Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. Demonstrated ability to perform in-depth quantitative and statistical analysis and good data reporting skills with high level attention to detail and accuracy. Knowledge on mobile data collection tools using Open Data Kit (ODK), KOBO tool box or other data collection platforms as desirable Knowledge in conducting literature review of peer reviewed publications and research reports. Support report and manuscript writing for quality output delivery of excellent written and verbal English communication skills Experience with aquaculture, science and development. Experience with management and curation of biological and social science data. Experience with working in the field with rural communities and Knowledge and experience working in the field in Africa, Asia or the Pacific Experience interacting with the local or international aquaculture industry. Proven proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel to extract, combine, analyze and refine large data sets. Knowledge in using either STATA, GAMS, R, Matlab, SPSS Database software and Microsoft office and applications Experience writing research reports.

Terms of Appointment

The position is on a 1-fixed term contract.

Job Level
