Your responsibilities
In this role, you will join the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, more specifically the Accelerators & Sites section of the HSE Radiation Protection (RP) group. The section monitors and enforces compliance with radiation protection regulations and execute projects, studies and services aimed at protecting people and the environment from the ionising radiation generated by CERN's activities. By joining the RP group, you will work in close contact with RP Physicists and RP Engineers in charge of the operational radiation protection of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) complex.
The TCC2/TDC2/TT20 areas within the North Area are of significant radiological concern. To address this issue, a campaign has been initiated by Radiation Protection (RP) to mitigate radiological risks by offering design guidelines for equipment being subject to high beam impacts or undesirable losses.
Your role will be to continue these actions, encompassing the following responsibilities:
Categorizing Radiological Criticality of equipment: Assessing the radiological criticality of equipment across the region, spanning from the SPS extraction area to the target areas and beyond.FLUKA Simulations: Establishing FLUKA simulations or adapting existing ones to analyse the present and future radiological impacts resulting from the beam operation of such equipment.ActiWiz Calculations: using fluence input from FLUKA, ActiWiz will be used to improve material compositions in terms of RP aspects.Optimization Studies: Conducting optimization studies on equipment to significantly reduce radiological risks, including residual dose rates and specific activation. This comprises the proper choice of materials used to build the equipment and the use of radiological favourable shielding.Collaborative Improvement Strategies: Collaborating with equipment owners to devise realistic strategies for enhancing future equipment designs, ensuring optimized radiological performance while preserving functionality.Operational RP Support for NA consolidation works: Providing assistance for ad hoc operational RP queries arising from the North Area consolidation project. By executing these tasks, you will play a pivotal role in the radiological improvement of the North Area, with the viewpoint of future increased beam intensities used in these areas.Your profile

Experience in radiation protectionMonte Carlo simulation codes for particle transport (FLUKA, MCNP, PHITS, etc)Operational RP experience is an assetProgramming skills are good to have but not a prerequisiteFluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantageEligibility criteria:
You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.You have a professional background in Physics or Nuclear Engineering (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.Job closing date: 21.04.2024 at 23:59 CEST.
