Work LocationAbu Dhabi This internship is designed to be full-time and in person but can be adjusted based on needs of the successful candidate Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is an intergovernmental treaty, under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), concerned with the conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale. The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs (Dugong dugon) and their Habitats throughout their Range (Dugong MOU) is an agreement established under CMS. The Secretariat of the Dugong MOU, which is located in the CMS Office – Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), is seeking three interns to support its activities. The internship is located within the CMS Office – Abu Dhabi, under the Dugong MOU and 2030 Seagrass Breakthrough programmes, and the intern reports to the Programme Management Officer, IKI Seagrass Ecosystem Services Project. The intern will support the implementation of the Dugong Conservation and Management Plan and broader seagrass conservation initiatives. Specific responsibilities include: - Coordinating, drafting, and publishing news stories, social media content, and newsletters to raise awareness of dugong and seagrass conservation efforts. - Supporting the planning and delivery of events, workshops, and virtual meetings, including the Fourth Meeting of Signatories (MOS4) and activities related to the 2030 Seagrass Breakthrough. - Assisting in the development of communication materials, policy briefs, and lessons-learned reports to promote sustainable management of seagrass ecosystems. - Maintaining databases, taking meeting notes, preparing internal and external reports, and performing ad-hoc research or administrative tasks as required. - Supporting engagement with partners, stakeholders, and the wider CMS community, including tracking communications, preparing outreach materials, and helping coordinate collaborative activities. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Minimum Bachelor´s level or equivalent), or c) Have graduated with a university degree. Candidates with the following areas of study will be given preference: biology, ecology, zoology, environmental science, geography, international law, international relations, or data analytics. Applicants must: • Have a keen interest in working on wildlife conservation matters • Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations • Have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter • Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views • Be literate in standard computer software LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
