UNHCR’s Office in Italy is a multi-Country one responsible for Italy, San Marino and the Holy See.
Italy plays an important role in refugee protection in Europe, remaining one of the major points of arrival for persons seeking protection to Europe, with most of them arriving by sea via the Mediterranean. So far in 2023, 132,311 migrants and refugees originating from 57 countries arrived in Italy by sea with Italy receiving 70% of all sea arrivals to Southern Europe. Based upon current arrival trends, it is anticipated that in 2024 Italy will continue to receive the large bulk of all asylum-seekers arriving in Europe by sea as well as an increasing number arriving by land and air. While there have been fluctuations in levels of arrivals, the drivers of the movements from Africa and the Middle East moving along the Central Mediterranean and Balkan routes will remain or worsen because of the various political tensions in the Sub-Saharan region.
In all its efforts to safeguard protection and promote solutions, UNHCR prioritizes vulnerable people, particularly unaccompanied children and survivors of Gender Based Violence (GBV). It will continue to engage with refugees and empower communities and endeavor to improve the perception of persons we serve.
In addition to the cross-cutting priorities mentioned above, MCO Italy identifies three strategic goals covering the delivery of UNHCR protection and assistance in Italy and external engagement with the Government of Italy and the Vatican:
1. Expanding solutions for persons of concern and addressing secondary movements;
2. Safeguarding best practices in protection;
3. Enhancing Italy’s role as a UNHCR global partner.
Interns bring diverse profiles and knowledge, innovative thinking and different ideas to the UNHCR workplace.
