Human Resources Management Service, Division of Administration of the United Nations Office at Geneva, The incumbent reports to the Senior Nurse and to the Medical Officers. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the nurse will be responsible for the following duties: Occupational Safety and Health (OSH): - Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officers in providing adequate professional emergency care, including monitoring and recording vital signs, performing basic life support, placing an IV-line, preparing and administering medications through the indicated route, dressing wounds, etc. - Ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate: documents case findings in the electronic records system. - Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, x-rays, draws blood for laboratory tests and other samples as required. - Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly or facilitates referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as indicated. - Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs. - Organizes work environment evaluations, like ergonomic workplace assessments and provides advice. - Addresses other occupational health issues, like incident reporting, recommends preventive measures and refers to CCU in collaboration with Security. - Performs entry clearances, assessing fitness for a specific role in collaboration with the Medical Officer in charge and proceeds this in Medical Database. - Ensures preparation and writing of new and updating Standards of Procedures and organizes and/or follows internal continuous Medical Education (CME). Travel medicine: - Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments. Instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit and responds or refers adequately in case of complaints return. - Proceeds to all travel clearances in the medical database. Various administrative tasks: - Carries out daily tasks to ensure the smooth running of Medical Service. - Updates vaccination records. - Checks regular medication stock and expiration dates. - Sterilizes equipment. - Records statistical activities in the infirmary. - Performs administrative tasks and proceeds this in the medical database if required during mass recruitments and whenever necessary. - Performs other related duties as required. CompetenciesPROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and, preferably, Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent emergency medical care. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them. Knowledge of modern medical information technology and solid computer skill. EducationUniversity degree (B.S. or equivalent) in nursing is required. National registration and license are required. Job - Specific QualificationBasic Life Support and Automatic Electronic Defibrillator certifications are required for life saving and support during medical emergency. Formal training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), preferably in Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent emergency medical care, is desirable. Work ExperienceAt least seven (7) years of experience in a clinical nursing including practice with nursing activities needed on hospital wards or equivalent (blood drawing, IV catheters’ placement, wound dressing, stitches removal, administration of IV fluids and medications under medical doctor’s guidance, etc.) is required. Experience with medical facilities in an international setting is desirable. Experience with a medical database such as EarthMed is desirable. Experience in occupational and travel nursing is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
