Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The overall objective of the UNEP's Ecosystems Division is to support countries in conserving, restoring and sustainably managing their terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, the biodiversity they contain and the products and services they provide for human well-being and prosperity. The Division's mandate is to address the environmental causes and effects from an ecosystems approach, including the consequences of disasters and conflicts. Focusing on tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, rampant pollution, across aquatic and associated ecosystems, the Marine and Coastal Unit help countries develop policies and programmes to respond to ecosystems challenges, and reduce pollution from land-based activities, increase resilience to climate change and reflect linkages between poverty and the environment in their development planning. The Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Unit leads on the development of flagship programmes and a portfolio of projects that advance the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems. This position is hosted by the UNEP Marine and Coastal Unit, in the Marine and Freshwater Branch. The Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Within the Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Unit, the Multimedia and Graphic Design Specialist will support the UNEP team to deliver on communications deliverables related to UNEP’s work on marine ecosystems. Working under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Marine and Coastal Unit and receiving guidance from the Programme Management Officer, the consultant will be responsible for carrying out the following tasks: A. Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) website management • Ensure timely update of content on the GFCR website • Co-develop and implement the 2025/2026 communications strategy for the GFCR and implement the GFCR pipeline across website, including placement of communications pieces across media channels - Social Media and Traditional media aligned with key events (UNGA, COP30, UNEA, OOC etc.). • Draft, design, and post compelling content, including graphics, carousels, short videos, case studies and stories on the GFCR website. • Monitor engagement metrics, prepare monthly analytics reports, and recommend optimizations for the GFCR website and across targeted social media channels. • Coordinate with partners to amplify cross-promotional opportunities. B. Newsletter Development and placement of communications collateral • Plan, write, and design GFCR’s quarterly e-newsletter for donors, partners, and stakeholders. • Coordinate content contributions from GFCR partners, projects, convening agents and secretariat staff. • Coordinate the distribution of the newsletter ensuring to capture metrics and analytics. • Secure and ensure placement of communications collateral across media outlets – including traditional and social media channels for partners. C. Multimedia Product Development and graphic design • GFCR branding toolkit (including the revised logo lock up for GFCR, UNEP, UNCDF and UNDP) • Conceptualize and produce multimedia products such as infographics, motion graphics, short videos, and photo stories showcasing GFCR’s impact. • Work with videographers, designers, or external agencies to ensure timely, high-quality production. • Develop visual assets and templates consistent with GFCR’s brand identity • Develop the graphics for various branding material including the website. D. Strategic Support for events and campaigns • Support the roll-out of key campaigns around flagship events and announcements. • Ensure consistent use of GFCR messaging across all digital platforms. • Contribute to periodic communications reporting to UNEP and GFCR Steering Committee. Qualifications/special skillsA university degree (master’s or equivalent) in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. .• A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public information, media relations, or knowledge management, preferably within the environmental or sustainable development sectors is required. • Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams, including local and expatriate technical experts is required. • Demonstrated experience in events, webinar, training and workshop planning is desirable. • Knowledge of website development and social media tools is desirable. • Strong skills in data analysis and reporting on communication and engagement metrics, with the ability to derive insights and recommend improvements is desirable.
