At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Introduction
Are you a highly motivated mechanical engineer eager to take in exciting challenges?
Are you ready to design the longest ultra-high vacuum system ever built and do you have a solid technical background and experience in mechanical and structural design? If you're driven by the challenge of pushing the boundaries of science and technology, this is your chance to make a mark. Join the Vacuum, Surfaces, and Coatings Group and be part of our dynamic team responsible for the development of the vacuum system for the Future Circular Collider!
The Vacuum, Surfaces, and Coatings (VSC) Group is at the forefront of CERN’s pioneering technological research, overseeing all high and ultra-high vacuum systems across the CERN accelerators. From design to operation, surface engineering to acceptance tests, we handle it all. The Design, Logistics and Methods section (DLM) is in charge of the design of vacuum systems from the conceptual design to engineering, through prototyping.
Functions
Within the VSC Group of the Technology Department, you will:
Design the ultra-high vacuum system for the Future electron-positron Circular Collider (FCCee) storage rings and booster, including vacuum chambers and interconnections;Contribute to the development of vacuum technologies required for the FCCee, including thermal spray, additive manufacturing, shape-memory-alloy implementation and new welding techniques;Define and carry out characterisation tests to assess new technical solutions. Design, produce and assemble prototypes and their test benches;Test materials for compatibility with vacuum environments, including leak detection and outgassing rate measurements;Lead and actively participate in the design, manufacturing and installation of FCCee vacuum system mock-ups;Play an active role in multidisciplinary projects, requiring close collaboration with teams in charge of other accelerator systems and engineering fields.Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering. or a related field.
