We invite you to become a key member of our team, where you will play a crucial role in archiving our teams mission by overseeing the system engineering of our cutting-edge production target and other beam-intercepting devices.
This position is dedicated to the advancement of the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC), one of CERN's flagship projects.
We are committed to the ongoing feasibility studies for this exciting endeavour. For example, developing High Power (MW-class) production targets, conceptualizing target systems, designing beam windows, beam dumps and other absorbers, and engineering shielding solutions at the collider's interaction regions.
In this position, you will focus on systems engineering and conducting Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on various International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) components, identifying operational limitations, execute radiation damage studies, dimensioning components and auxiliary services for both final facility and demonstrator.
Together with our international partners, you will work on liquid metal target technologies and possibly support the design of a small-scale liquid lead experiment at CERN's High Radiation to Materials (HiRadMat) facility.
Specifically, you will:
Work on the conceptual design of the final facility target systems as well as for the demonstrator facility;Collaborate closely with designers, physicists, and engineers to align engineering specifications with physics requirements;Collaborate with international partners for liquid metal targets and absorbers;Present regular status updates at project meetings, gather feedback, and engage in technical discussions;Perform FEA thermo-mechanical studies, particularly for dynamic problems;Conduct CFD and conjugate heat transfer (CHT) analyses;Propose conceptual designs and improvements for various components;Conduct literature research to identify relevant technologies and design solutions;Assist in the design, production, and operation of prototype components, and possibly on a small-scale liquid lead experiment at CERN's HiRadMat.Your profile
Skills and/or knowledge
Technical competencies/experience:
Demonstrated experience in thermo-mechanical calculations and CFD engineering;Experience in relevant FEA software tools, such as Ansys (or equivalentSoft skills:
Strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking;Excellent written and verbal communication skills;Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously;Effective communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration;Proactive problem-solving mindset with the ability to defend ideas using technical arguments; Autonomy in handling specific technical tasks within a team context.Language:
Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.Eligibility criteria:
You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.You have a professional background in Mechanical, Aerospace, Nuclear Engineering, Applied Physics (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.Job closing date: 31.01.2024 at 23:59h (midnight) CET.
