Job Description

CERN operates the largest accelerator complex in the world, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and, with a total of 130 km of vacuum vessel, one of the largest vacuum systems in the world. Are you a Material Engineer and are interested in working in this unique world scientific infrastructure? Then join CERN's Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings team!

The surfaces facing the particle beams in the vacuum system of the LHC need to be treated, in order to reduce the beam induced heat load, through the electron cloud and thus, improve the machine performance.

You will join CERN's Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings (TE-VSC-SCC) section, which is in charge of surface analysis and surface modifications through plasma treatment and thin film coating and will define the type of treatment to be selected.

The treatment recipe for a specific section of LHC will be defined in small scale laboratory experiments before building the infrastructure to perform the process \"in situ\" in the machine in 2026.

As a Material Engineer, your responsabilities will include:

• Contribute to the selection of this method by performing surface analysis (X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy) on treated samples at room and cryogenic temperatures;

• Monitor the surface composition of the resulting copper surface and its secondary electron yield;

• Provide feedback to a small team of physicists and engineers, in order to optimize the process;

• Participate in the implementation of the treatments in the LHC by giving feedback to the designers and mechanical engineers to optimize the treating device;

• Participate in the initial phase of the treatment campaign in LHC during the Long Shutdown 3.

Who we are looking for

Skills and/or knowledge

MSc or PhD in Physics or Material Science;Experience working in a surface analysis system;Experience in vacuum based surface modification;Experience in ultra-high vacuum technology;Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
