ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
Global hunger has reached alarming levels in 2022, and WFP, the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2020, remains dedicated and committed to address this global food crisis. The United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) is a network of strategically located hubs established to support humanitarian organizations and the broader international community in responding to emergencies and crises. UNHRD provides essential services such as storage, easy access to critical supplies, and technical assistance.
THE ROLE
To support the lab’s logistics operations and contribute to its mission of driving innovation in humanitarian preparedness and response and supply chain management. The position holder will contribute to fostering innovative solutions and promoting technological advancements to address global humanitarian challenges in emergency preparedness and response. The Innovation Lab is a key resource within UNHRD, playing a central role in ensuring continuity of innovation efforts in close collaboration with the humanitarian partners. The position holder will report to the Head of the Innovation Lab.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):
Collaborate with design teams and key stakeholders to support the co-creation of solutions that address the evolving needs of humanitarian response, providing necessary logistical input and support.
Assist in developing technical specifications for long-term agreements related to core activities and items (e.g., Mobile Storage Units, generators, prefabs), and support the evaluation of proposals to ensure compliance with UNHRD standards.
Assist in the identification, evaluation, and adoption of innovative technologies and practices, providing logistical insights and support to ensure successful implementation contributing to the development and implementation of cutting-edge supply chain solutions.
Coordinate requisitioning and ensure the timely delivery of commodities and supplies for Innovation Lab projects to authorized partners and destinations, supporting the lab’s experimental and pilot initiatives.
Manage logistics vendors’ contracting activities, including performance monitoring and measurement, ensuring that vendors meet the innovative and quality standards required for the lab's projects.
Support gathering market intelligence and conducting vendor assessments (e.g., transporters, suppliers) to support the vendor selection process for the Innovation Lab's projects and initiatives.
Prepare, monitor, and revise budgets for projects within the Innovation Lab, ensuring adherence to relevant procedures and compliance with corporate standards.
Perform research, collect data and conduct data analysis and produce reports on various aspects of the Innovation Lab, ensuring accurate and reliable data for informed decision-making.
Process any documentation related to the Innovation Lab activity (invoice verification, etc) and take appropriate actions to resolve operational issues, escalating complex issues to the supervisor as needed.
Support with communication activities (prepare presentations, present to stakeholders, work with communication experts as required, etc) to attract the interest from private sector, suppliers, partners for the Innovation Lab current and future initiatives and to keep the community of partners abreast of the Innovation Lab achievements.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Completion of secondary School education. Additional degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Engineering, Product Design, Project Management is desirable.
Experience: Minimum 6 years’ professional experience in humanitarian sector, and/or development projects and related fields
Language: Proficiency in Italian and in English (Level C) is required. Proficiency in another UN language is an asset.

Salary scale: UN - Salary Scale
Applicants must be:
Italian Residents holding a valid passport and/or identity card, and;
Reside within commuting distance (100-kilometer radius or distance that can be covered within 1.5 hours by car or public transport under average conditions of traffic, weather, and roads) to the office location at the duty station World Food Programme, UNHRD Brindisi, Ex SS 16 Km 906.9, 72100 Brindisi, Italy). If not residing within commuting distance at the time of application, candidates must be willing to relocate to Brindisi, Italy, at their own cost before taking up the assignment. WFP shall not be responsible for any costs associated with such relocation nor shall WFP assist or otherwise be involved in obtaining residency status or legal work permits. Preference will be given to candidates who reside within commuting distance of Brindisi, Italy.
