The IUCN World Conservation Congress
Every 4 years, the World Conservation Congress brings together several thousand participants for a 7-day event, including 3.5 day for IUCN Members’ Assembly, preceded by a 3.5 days Forum with several hundred events open to the general public. The Congress also includes an exhibit hall open to the general public, allowing exhibitors to showcase their research, innovations and other work to the broadest Congress audience. At previous Congresses, the exhibition was between 10-11’000m2, featuring up to 150 small, medium and large stands. In addition, several central open presentation areas, or “central stages” accommodating up to 150 people are included in the Exhibition Zone.
The next edition of the IUCN World Conservation Congress will take place in Abu Dhabi from 9-15 October 2025.
2. IUCN Leaders Forum
IUCN has initiated an annual meeting which complement the 4-year cycle of the World Conservation Congress with more regular inputs into the international agenda. These meetings, focusing on an invitation list with a view to convening approximately 500 participants, are hosted by different host countries or institutions from the Congress itself.
The next edition of the IUCN Leaders Forum will take place in Geneva from 8-10 October 2024.
3. Other Global Event
IUCN organises multiple events with varying frequencies and scales. The Event Communications Junior Professional Officer may be required to assist with event communications-related tasks for these events. JOB DESCRIPTION This temporary position is designed to provide professional development opportunities to young professionals or recent graduates, under 35 years old; it offers the incumbent the unique opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in event communications in an environmental international organization.
The Junior Professional - Event Communications will assist the Event Communications Manager and the Global Convenings and Events team in coordinating communications for the quadrennial IUCN World Conservation Congress, the annual Leaders Forum, and other IUCN events. This role involves supporting the development and implementation of communications strategies for a range of events, from small meetings to large-scale virtual and hybrid convenings. The Junior Professional will play a key role in content creation, stakeholder engagement, and logistical support to ensure the success of these events.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Content Creation and Coordination:
o Assist in the development and production of event communications and marketing materials, including website content, multimedia, email campaigns, and printed materials.
o Support the translation and localisation of communications materials in English, French, and Spanish.
• Event Support:
o Aid in the execution of onsite communications plans, ensuring participants have necessary information and that external audiences are engaged.
o Assist in capturing and promoting event highlights, including photos, videos, and key outcomes.
o Support post-event communications to maintain participant engagement and disseminate results.
• Project Management:
o Help manage daily activities of external contractors, including copywriters, graphic designers, videographers, and communications agencies.
o Assist in tracking progress, managing budgets, and compiling monitoring and analytics reports.
• Administrative Support:
o Provide general administrative support to the Event Communications Manager and Convenings Manager.
o Help prepare internal reports on communications efforts and outcomes, including lessons learned. REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Public Relations, communications, journalism, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in event marketing or communications.
• Fluency in English is a must; proficiency in French and/or Spanish, or Arabic is a plus.
• Strong writing and editing abilities with a keen attention to detail.
• Familiarity with web and social media management, newsletter production, and video production.
• Pro-active, a self-starter, dynamic, and results focused.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
• Flexible, open-minded, and willing to take on diverse responsibilities, including administrative tasks.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment.
• Knowledge of graphic design software is a strong plus.
• Experience with CMS platforms like Drupal or WordPress is an advantage.
• Willingness to work outside normal working hours and travel to events as required. SALARY The gross annual salary for this position is CHF 60'000, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
