Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty. In it’s work in Sub Saharan Africa, the agency through the Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) supports it’s member states to address the rapid unplanned urbanization trend the continent is facing and achieve sustainable development, it does so by focusing on providing solutions to challenges faced by cities in the region, this ultimately builds resilience and spurs economic development for the cities and its inhabitants. The overall goal for UN-Habitat and it’s operation in Sub-Saharan Africa is to leverage sustainable urbanization for a transformative, resilient, and peaceful cities in Africa while addressing the housing challenges alongside challenges associated to land and basic services. By addressing the challenges, the agency will aim to further impact the following three main areas; - - Equitable and inclusive prosperity for poverty eradication - Preparedness, response, recovery and reconstruction - Environment and climate action To effectively implement it’s mandate UN-Habitat, through the Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) is hiring a Project Management - Intern to support the office in implementing it’s strategic priorities. This position will be located in UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) in Nairobi, Kenya and under the overall supervision of the Director, Regional Office for Africa, the intern will perform the following duties; Responsibilities • Assist in the preparation and organization of both in-person and virtual meetings, workshops, and conferences. This includes tasks such as preparing invitations, coordinating with participants, managing schedules, and ensuring logistical arrangements are in place • Support the creation of written outputs such as speeches or content for internal use. This includes researching background information, drafting initial versions, and revising drafts based on feedback from supervisors or subject matter experts • Support the generation of Communication materials for consumption by diverse audiences. • Support research broadly on urban development but specifically on Housing, climate change and environment, and conflict and humanitarian crisis in Africa. • Support interaction with country offices for development of project concept notes and any other interactions. • Prepare discussions, webinar and other forms of meeting related to urban resilience • Support the reporting and communication efforts of the office with liaison of field offices and the global office. • Undertake any other duties as may be assigned. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Currently enrolled and have attended University courses in the last 12 months inclusive of having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated in the last 6 months in urban planning, environmental management, architecture, development studies, Economics, or related field. In addition, successful applicants are expected to have demonstrated ability in one or more areas listed below: • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) • Ability to summarize and analyze technical urban and housing content for various audience • Strong communication skills in English, knowledge in French is desirable. • Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms; • Advanced knowledge of standard software packages, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud etc. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.
