Setting and ReportingThe Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (\"Mechanism\") was established by the Human Rights Council in its resolution 39/2, adopted on 27 September 2018, to investigate serious international crimes (i.e., crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide) and other violations of international law. The creation of the Mechanism was welcomed by the General Assembly in its resolution 73/264, adopted on 22 December 2018. This position is located in the Collection, Analysis and Sharing Section (CASS), based in Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent reports to an Investigator, P-4 in CASS. ResponsibilitiesUnder the direct supervision of an Investigator, P-4 in CASS, the incumbent will perform the following functions: - Undertakes in-depth research, review and analysis of information in Myanmar languages and English relating to sexual and gender-based crimes (SGBC) and crimes against and affecting children (CAAC), including through the use of analytical software, in accordance with investigations relevant to crimes within the IIMM’s mandate; - Gathers, collects, evaluates and analyses information in the Myanmar language and/or English to identify relevance, information gaps and/or inconsistencies, and to inform decisions relating to investigative activities with particular emphasis on SGBC and CAAC; - Provides strategic advice and guidance on issues related to gender and intersectional analysis, conducts research to identify relevant evidence and open-source information to develop analytical products with particular emphasis on criminal liability for SGBC and CAAC, organises and synthesises information that will advance investigations, responding to requests for assistance and case building activities; - Liaises and coordinates with relevant organizations and individuals including by making logistical and other operational arrangements for incidents pertaining to SGBC or CAAC; - Organizes and conducts interviews of witnesses, in particular witnesses of SGBC or CAAC; - Maintains and updates the IIMM's electronic information management systems for the collection and preservation of information relevant for building files to facilitate criminal prosecutions and analysis to support ongoing or future criminal investigations or prosecutions by national, regional or international courts or tribunals; - Participates in briefings and conferences, including for national investigative, prosecutorial and judicial authorities, civil society actors, UN entities and other partners relevant to collection and analysis of information and evidence of SGBC and/or CAAC, including by providing language support; - Contributes to the development of protocols, standard operating procedures and guidance documents on the collection, consolidation, preservation and analysis of information related to crimes within the IIMM's mandate, with particular emphasis on SGBC and CAAC; - Performs other duties as required including interpretation and translation on an ad hoc basis. Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience analysing serious international crimes, including SGBC and/or CAAC is required. Work experience in analysis related to Myanmar is desirable. Work experience with women’s organizations, LGBTQI+ organizations or other civil society organisations in or relating to Myanmar is desirable. Work experience using analytical software is desirable. Work experience with an investigative, prosecutorial or judicial institution/body at the national or international level is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Fluency in the Myanmar language (Burmese) is also required. Knowledge of another language used in Myanmar (such as Chin, Kachin, Rakhine, Ta’ang, Karenni, Karen, Rohingya or Shan) is desirable.
