Work LocationBrindisi, Italy Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs. This Internship is located in the Analytics and Location Intelligence Unit (ALIU) within the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) under the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) at UNGSC in Brindisi, Italy. The internship is for six (6) months. One (1) post is available. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Responsibilities: Our interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in UNGSC, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. The Intern will work under the direct guidance of Chief ALIU and will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Assist in Time-Series Analysis: Work with time-series data to monitor changes in vegetation, rainfall, and land cover over time, using remote sensing to identify trends in environmental changes. 2. Assist with Deforestation and Land Degradation Monitoring: Support ongoing projects focused on deforestation and land degradation, using satellite imagery to assess and quantify environmental changes in key land resources. 3. Remote Sensing Analysis for Soil and Water Quality: Assist in remote sensing analysis to detect and monitor soil and water contamination, contributing to the development of indicators for environmental health and resource management. 4. Vegetation Health Monitoring: Assist in applying vegetation indices to monitor vegetation conditions, contributing to environmental assessments and land management strategies. 5. Documentation and Methodology Development: Document analytical processes, methodologies, and project findings to contribute to project reports and support reproducibility of the analyses. 6. Cartographic production: Contribute to organizing the results of the analyses for the delivery to the client by using the standard templates created by the Team. Qualifications/special skillsPlease note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). The field of studies must be closely related to the type of Internship you are applying for, such as Geography, Geomatics, Computer Science, or a related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Candidate must be familiar with ArcGIS (Desktop, Server, and online applications). Candidate must have the ability to organize, prioritize, and complete projects efficiently. Candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills. Candidate must demonstrate effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Commitment to data privacy, security, and ethical considerations in handling geospatial information is derirable. Ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and adapt to evolving project requirements is desirable. Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and methodologies is desirable.
