At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Introduction
Play a key role in expanding, strengthening, and maintaining CERN’s signal and power cable installations serving various systems within the CERN accelerators and in related radiation-exposed areas.Conduct studies, detailed design, and component selection for signal cabling, developing optimised strategies to minimise radiation exposure and enhance cable reliability and lifetimeMore information here.
Functions
Conduct studies including the definition of cable types, connector assemblies and routing, in collaboration with users and taking into consideration the constraints of the installation environment such as radiation exposure.Assess and report on cable system ageing through sample analysis and evaluation of operating environments.Define radiation-damaged cable replacement strategy for the CERN accelerators based on cable conditions and total integrated dose taken by the cables.Propose, develop and implement cabling execution strategy aiming to reduce radiation exposure by the workers during cabling activities, according to the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” principle.Draw up technical specifications for cables and connectors, participate in the tendering process and manage associated industrial supply contracts.Lead projects related to the extension, replacement, or dismantling of electrical cable systems, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget.Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and presentations, including progress reports and project reviews.Ensure the preparation of detailed work documentation (e.g., drawings, cable lists) for CERN’s contractors, ensuring clarity and compliance with standards for electrical system installations.Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electrical Engineer or a related field.
Experience:
Proven experience with signal and power cables, including their connectors.Demonstrated experience in supervision of cabling installations, including the preparation of work files, on-site supervision, and acceptance of electrical cabling projects.Experience in designing cable systems for radiation-exposed areas and understanding of related materials.Experience in contract tendering, including drafting technical specifications and evaluating proposals.Technical competencies:
Design and manufacturing of cables, including connectors;Project management;Contract management;Design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical cable systems.Behavioural competencies:
Achieving Results: driving work / projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion.Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.Managing Self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.Solving Problems: anticipating obstacles; assessing alternative solutions in order to have a fall-back plan.Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.Language skills:
