The UNHCR digital service creates, builds, and promotes digital solutions for all UNHCR’s audiences including the public, partners, refugees, governments, and colleagues to change the way UNHCR communicates and engages through digital technology and channels.
The Digital Solutions Unit coordinates the delivery of public websites and mobile applications to support the Organization's needs for web presence, advocacy, and online fundraising.
The position
The ideal candidate for this position will be a recent graduate, with a demonstrable commitment to refugee issues. You should have a desire to develop skills and experience in digital, websites quality and online user experience.
You should have the ability to always maintain a high level of confidentiality, and good interpersonal skills, flexibility and attention to detail are essential. Knowledge of websites quality, User Experience or Search Engine Optimization is an advantage.
Essential minimum qualifications
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
Please note that candidates who have immediate relatives (father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister) working as staff members of UNHCR are not eligible.
Required qualifications
• Academic background in digital, digital marketing, computer science, quality assurance, web development studies or other relevant field;
• Good understanding of the web development lifecycle
• Experience of updating and managing websites
• Strong verbal communication and writing skills in English
• Experience and interest in improving online user experiences
Key duties and responsibilities:
• Review the minimum standards and performance indicators for UNHCR web presence in the fields of usage, branding, look-and-feel, governance, security, etc.
• Assess the websites on the portfolio against the defined web standards.
• Assist with user acceptance testing (UAT) of website migration from WordPress to Drupal.
• Perform content edits and quality checks using Drupal content management system (CMS) where needed.
Knowledge, experience, skills relevant for this internship:
• Good understanding of the web standards and how to assess quality, performance, accessibility, design, etc.
• Experience of updating and managing websites.
• Experience and interest in improving online user experiences.
• Analytical and drafting skills, experience in producing analytical reports.
• Good intercultural communication skills.
• Eye for details.
• Strong verbal communication and writing skills in English.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
Graduates with a background in digital, digital marketing, computer science, quality assurance, web development studies or other relevant disciplines are encouraged to apply.
What the intern will learn
• Understanding of the UN systems and process;
• Understanding of the importance of public websites’ quality to support the organization’s communication and online fundraising strategies
• Overview of the humanitarian Inter-Agency system and UNHCR’s coordination role;
• Exposure to wide range of refugee issues and current thinking on the UN system, forced displacement and humanitarian issues;
• Internal processes and inter-divisional collaboration in a large humanitarian organisation;
• Working in a multicultural and multilingual team.
Location
The successful candidate will be based with the team in the Geneva, Switzerland.
Conditions
• The internship is full time (40 hours per week) Monday to Friday.
• The intern will report to the Head of the Digital Solutions Unit
Allowance
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
