Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Statistics, Data and Digital Service of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Data Scientist reports to the Chief of Statistics Service. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Data Scientist will be responsible for the following duties: • Studies, explores, and evaluates new and existing data sources, including Sustainable Development Goals indicators, to determine their effectiveness and accuracy for use in decision making for progress beyond GDP, and assess their suitability for actionable output. Provide data-driven recommendations to stakeholders. • Designs and builds predictive data science products, such as visualizations, models or AI/ML algorithms for initial simulations or prototypes and subsequent ingestion into mainstream software applications. • Liaises with technology stakeholders to access infrastructure, software and services needed to develop and deploy data science products. • Promotes use of data science solutions to measure progress beyond GDP; Reviews data gaps and highlights needs for statistical capacity building support, raises awareness of available data products. • Develops methods, products, data analytics tools and innovative solutions to support countries in obtaining relevant data. Assesses impact using key performance indicators; Iteratively improve products based on findings. • Engages in complex research and analyses to develop universally applicable data products for member States; uses internal and publicly available data and information. • Contributes to short- and long-term planning to support the high-level expert group on Beyond GDP and the application of its recommendations. • Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy. • Provide expert advice and prepare speeches and technical inputs. EducationAdvanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in data science, computer science, information management, statistics, public administration, public information, management or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Job - Specific QualificationNot available. Work ExperienceA minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in official statistics, data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management or related area is required. Experience of data science tools such as Jupyter, Matlab, Knime, SPSS, SAS, or Statistical Programming Languages such as R, Python, Javascript or related is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English and French are required. Either Spanish or Arabic or Chinese (Mandarin) or Russian is desirable.
