Work LocationGeneva Expected duration12 May - 25 July 20 Duties and ResponsibilitiesUN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP Climate Finance Unit seeks to unlock and (re)direct public and private capital to sustainable land use, including deforestation-free commodity production. Initially CFU focused on developing and supporting several (blended) finance facilities and business incubators as concrete solutions to unlock private finance for ‘net zero, nature positive’ land use practices. CFU is doing normative work to track public and private finance in the State of Finance for Nature programme and report series. The State of Finance for Nature (SFN) initiative quantifies public and private finance flows to Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to tackle global challenges of biodiversity loss, land degradation and climate change. The SFN aims to inform public and private actors on progress in mobilizing finance to reach key targets to limit global warming, halt biodiversity loss and achieve land degradation neutrality. SFN also tracks finance flows from public and private sources that have a direct negative impact on nature. The programme is expanding to deliver a further global report (to be published in 2025), country and regional analyses, targeted engagement with the Rio Conventions and derivative products. Under the supervision of the Head, Climate Finance Unit and working with the SFN Coordinator, the consultant will: • Conduct literature reviews, data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis and drafting for the SFN global report and other SFN derivative reports. • Work with research partners, support technical and UNEP review process, support outreach • Support efforts to align SFN data, methods and processes with Rio Convention reporting and policy discussions. • Assist in the publication process, develop slide decks, infographics and briefing materials for report dissemination. • Undertake work to get SFN data and findings into the public domain via the website and a data platform with supporting guidance and documentation. The consultant will report to Head, Climate Finance Unit, Adaptation and Resilience Branch, Climate Change Division, working closely with the SFN Coordinator. Qualifications/special skillsA master’s degree with no experience or a bachelor’s degree with 2 years of experience. Familiarity with nature-based solutions and finance tracking methodologies is desirable. Should be autonomous and computer literate in standard software applications; proficient in data analysis tools such as Python, Power BI, and statistical software; have proven experience in drafting analytical reports and policy-relevant documents; have excellent writing and communication skills; strong analytical skills; have good interpersonal skills; can work independently to complete given assignments within tight deadlines.
