Program Overview
WRI Indonesia is an independent research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. At WRI Indonesia, we aim to bring innovations in research and business approaches in order to create the enabling conditions for Indonesia to achieve robust economic growth while respecting environmental and social values. We seek to contribute to the accomplishment of ambitious sustainable development goals through working with leaders in public and private sectors, as well as collaborating with civil society organizations, in turning big ideas into action.
Within our Agriculture, Forest and Land Use (AFOLU) Program, we envision critical ecosystems such as forests and peatland across Indonesia to be governed fairly and sustainably. We believe sustainable land use management is key for Indonesia to meet its climate goal, in line with keeping the global climate target below the 1.5 degree Celcius warming threshold, while providing sustainable livelihoods to forest-dependent communities and conserve biodiversity in the landscape. We intend to achieve this through safeguarding the remaining forest and peatland from deforestation, degradation, and fragmentation; maintaining forests and peatland quality through sound stewardship; and restoring degraded ecosystem to improve its productivity, conservation value, and ecosystem services.
To effectively safeguard the remaining forest and peatland, WRI Indonesia champions the use of technology solutions such as our cutting-edge Global Forest Watch platform to strengthen forest monitoring through publicly-accessible and actionable forest data and insights. We also focuses on supporting the combat against illegal logging and other forest-related crimes through research and policy advocacy that aims to improve accountability of land use and forest-related data, and strengthen the use of existing legal framework to enforce laws on forest protection.
Job Highlight
As a Research Analyst, he/she will support the research activities related to peatland to support the implementation of FOLU net sink 2030. This position will fall under the Land and Carbon Lab initiative and will report to Research Lead for Peatland. Land & Carbon Lab (LCL) is WRI’s premier hub for geospatial data, analysis, and monitoring of the world’s land and its natural ecosystems. Our data and monitoring solutions, which include the Global Forest Watch platform, exist to help accelerate implementation and financing of nature-based solutions worldwide. LCL has three main offers: (1) innovation in open geospatial data for land and carbon monitoring, (2) spatial intelligence to support NBS policy and target tracking, and (3) tailored tools that help businesses, governments, civil society organizations, and local communities make data-driven decisions. The program partners with leading scientists and technologies to curate best-in-class geospatial data on land use, land use change, and associated carbon stocks and flows. It also partners with decision-makers and local organizations that support a transformation of the complex geospatial data into actionable information.
Land and Carbon Lab’ objectives are to 1) Create, curate, and serve as concierge to the world’s most trusted source of geospatial data and analysis about global land cover and land use change and associated carbon emissions and removals; and 2) Design, deploy, and scale monitoring solutions for target end “users” (i.e., those whose decisions & behaviors we aim to influence to advance Produce, Protect, Restore strategies).
