Reducing Deforestation Through Implementation of Sustainable Production of Gayo Coffee in Bener Meriah, Aceh Province

The Indonesian Government has expanded its support for forest conservation programs by providing forestry and agricultural extensions at both the provincial and district levels. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia have consistently supported communities, farmers, and local governments by offering capacity building, practical knowledge, networking opportunities, strengthening women and youth access, influencing and controlling forest resources, and facilitating communication with the government.

One of WRI Indonesia's intervention locations is in Bener Meriah, Aceh Province. WRI Indonesia has been working with communities in Aceh in the last 10 years through various projects. The location of the coffee plantation is adjacent to the Leuser Ecosystem Area (KEL) which is an important area for biodiversity.

To make coffee plantations more productive and not have a negative impact on the forest ecosystem, the farmer need to be supported to implement Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) dan Sustainable Coffee Farming (SCF) at the farm level. Development partners, including WRI Indonesia, have been also proactively introducing nature-based Solutions and low-carbon technology as a means to address various challenges.

Through the project of Reducing Deforestation Through Implementation of Sustainable Production of Gayo Coffee in Bener Meriah, Aceh Province, farmers are assisted to manage their coffee production sustainably by applying the concept of sustainable forest management that incorporates conservation efforts while improving yield production and by taking into account production of renewable energy.

Job Highlight

The Community Facilitator will support the project in promoting sustainable and inclusive practices within coffee farmer communities. The responsibilties will focus on facilitating the day-to-day community empowerment initiatives towards a more productive and sustainable production, and to improve community financial literacy by collaborating with project’s specialist. This position will be required to build strong relationship with diverse range of stakeholders and fostering a sense of ownership over the project within the community.

This position will be based in Bener Meriah, Aceh, with office-flex working arrangement and travel requirement as needed. Working under direct supervision of Sustainable Coffee Project Lead, the position holder will work closely with project specialist, and maintain collaboration with other Aceh Regional team member to ensure synergy with other initiatives within the region.

What You Will Do

Project Implementation (50%)

  • Develop field facilitation work plan in coordination with the Project Lead, specialist and other project team.
  • Support and contribute to the baseline and needs assessment of the farmer group in collaboration with specialists and project leader.
  • Support and contribute in the development of various modules/ guidelines in the topic of GAP and Sustainable Coffee, coffee post-harvesting processing method; the use of energy-efficient method;
  • Facilitate implementation of business model development and improvement of financial literacy of targeted male, female, and youth coffee farmers.
  • In collaboration with the specialist, facilitate farmer awareness raising on GAP, financial literacy, renewable energy and processing of bioenergy from coffee husks and preparing field adoption of post-harvesting technology,
  • Facilitate the implementation of best coffer farming practices for independent smallholders in the project area through a capacity building and monitoring program, including implementation of sustainable practice of Coffee Gayo agroforestry that contribute to reduced GHG emission
  • Facilitate development of demonstration plot on production of bioenergy and utilization of proper and efficient post harvesting technology

    Outreach and Stakeholder Engagement (50%)

    • Support the development of stakeholder engagement strategy as necessary in coordination with the project lead.
    • Engagement with the community and local stakeholders,
    • Liaise with WRI Indonesia communication team for any communication-related products and events.

      What You Will Need

      • Bachelor’s degree in rural development, agriculture, environmental science, sustainability, or other related field.
      • Minimum 3 years of progressive professional work experience related to coffee sustainability standards and coffee GAP improvement-related activities.
      • Proven practical experience working in the coffee sector, preferably with smallholder producers and familiarity with issues related to coffee production. Previous experience working with local communities in Aceh region will be advantage.
      • Highly experienced in facilitating training program or workshops particularly around topic of sustainable farming best practices.
      • Strong understanding of environmental and social sustainability issues affecting agricultural commodities.
      • Experience in building a network of relationships and partnerships with village communities, government/authorities, civil society, and other stakeholders engaged in environmental issues.
      • Strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills, especially with local farmers.
      • Self-motivated individual with strong project management skill, ability to take initiative, decision making, and to manage competing priorities
      • Ability to conceptualize and convey strategic vision from the spectrum of smallholder development experience.
      • Business proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia on both verbal and written communications.
      • Strong coordination ability and team working spirit.
      • Ability and willingness to travel
      • Legally able to work in Indonesia

        Deliverables

        1. Engagement meetings with the community and local stakeholders,
        2. Annual work plan for farmer group together with the Project Lead and other project team to map all capacity development plan
        3. Modules/guidelines for sustainable coffee production (regenerative agriculture, coffee post-harvesting processing method; the use of energy-efficient method, etc)
        4. Farmer awareness raising on renewable energy and processing of bio-energy from coffee husks and preparing field adoption of post-harvesting technology,
        5. Capacity building on business development and improvement of financial literacy of targeted male, female, and youth coffee farmers.
        6. Facilitate the implementation of best coffer farming practices for independent smallholders in the project area through a capacity building and monitoring program, including implementation of sustainable practice of Coffee Gayo agroforestry that contribute to reduced GHG emission

          Terms of Payment

          Daily rate-based consultant with a maximum of 200 (two hundred) working days for the whole contract period or 20 (twenty) working days per month on average.
