Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganisational Setting: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmentalauthority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates international trade in specimens (plants, animals and parts and derivatives thereof) of about 36,000 species listed in the three Appendices of the Convention. In order to efficiently implement the Convention and ensure that when international wildlife trade occurs, it is legal, sustainable and traceable, Parties to CITES need to have in place adequate national legislation and designate one or more Management and Scientific authorities. The role of the Secretariat is to support Parties in the effective implementation of the Convention and the related Resolutions and Decisions. To further assist Parties and to ensure that the Convention continues to respond to current conservation needs and challenges, the Conference of the Parties is directing the Secretariat to undertake an increasing number of specific activities. The Secretariat is also tasked with organizing the annual meetings of the permanent committees and with organizing smaller ad hoc workshops and consultations. The CITES Secretariat is searching for a Communications Intern. The Internship will be for a minimum of three (3) months and a maximum of six (6) months within the Outreach and Projects Unit. The timing of the internship can be flexible according to the prospective interns' availability and academic constraints. Duties and Resposibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the CITES Outreach and Projects Unit, the intern will assist in the planning, researching, production, and release of communications and multimedia materials on a broad range of wildlife conservation and trade topics across various CITES channels. The activities will mainly have a dual focus on social media and graphics/image development and may include, among other related tasks: • Social media content drafting and design • Web and digital communications • Photo and video editing & production • Designing infographics and promotional materials • Support for the World Wildlife Day and CITES@50 campaign preparations. Qualifications/special skillsThe following Qualifications are required for this internship: • Academic background in communication, visual arts, environmental science, or other relevant areas (including social media, web development/management) • Knowledge and experience in desktop design is desirable; • Knowledge of standard software applications especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams and familiarity with Canva Pro, Adobe Suite or similar is desirable. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) or (c) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Work Experience: No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. LanguagesEnglish, Spanish and French are the working languages of the CITES Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
