The strategy will also promote the wide array of DCS services. The approach will be to: • Develop and implement a communication and outreach plan to raise awareness of the UNON conference centre and DCS services among key audiences. • Build a consistent, positive brand image for the UNON conference centre and DCS across a variety of communication channels, highlighting quality, efficiency, innovation, accessibility and multilingualism. • Enhance stakeholder engagement and satisfaction. • Drive higher utilization of the conference centre and DCS services. • Establish mechanisms to monitor and evaluate and improve communication outreach effectiveness. Work LocationNAIROBI Expected durationFOUR MONTHS Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the largest and only UN Headquarters in the Global South which also serves as a premier venue facility for meetings, conferences, and events. The UNON conference centre not only offers exceptional event spaces but through its Division of Conference Services (DCS) also provides a full range of conference services which supports clients in delivering impactful, high-quality events. DCS services include interpretation and translation into the 6 official UN languages, editing, text processing, report writing, publishing services, and conference planning, coordination, management and support. Recognizing the evolving demands of the UNON conference centre and in anticipation of the conference facility expansion and modernization, the Division of Conference Services is committed to revamping its communication outreach and promotion strategy. The core aim is to enhance the visibility of the UNON conference centre and its full suite of DCS services to attract more and diverse clientele, optimize utilization and ensure that UNON remains the venue of choice for high-profile events and collaborative initiatives. The renewed strategy will leverage DCS’ s competitive advantages, innovative service offerings and promote Nairobi’s unique position as a hub for international engagement and fostering multilateral cooperation. Under the direct supervision and coordination by the Chief of the Planning and Coordination Section, general guidance from the Chief of Division and in close liaison with other Sections head, the consultant will deliver a comprehensive strategy with a clear timeline. The role will focus on coordinating at least three key areas: A. Assessment, Strategy Development o Conduct a situational analysis of the existing communication and outreach practices of the Division including market trends, competitors, and client needs. o Assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of the conference centre and DCS services. o Develop a comprehensive communication and outreach strategy that will boost visibility and awareness of the UNON conference center as well as DCS services and activities. o Engage with key stakeholders (management, staff, clients, and partners) to identify expectations and opportunities and to define and develop the communication strategy goals, target audiences, and shape effective messaging and narratives. o Contribute to the creation and updating of the Division’s policy, guidance, and/or training related to strategic communications strategies and outreach. o Suggest brand positioning, marketing channels, and promotional tools (digital, traditional, and partnership-based). o Propose strategies to diversify the client base and increase revenue generation. o Recommend measurable performance indicators for monitoring and evaluation and the tools for reporting on communications approaches, activities, and strategies to assess their performance and effectiveness. o Contribute to the management of all aspects of strategy implementation, including timeline development and resource planning. o Support the design and execution of targeted outreach campaign to promote DCS offerings and identify opportunities for showcasing the facilities and services of the Division. o The consultant will prepare a final promotion strategy document with a phased implementation plan and resource estimates, ensuring ongoing monitoring and evaluation for continuous improvement. B. Content Development & Branding: o In close coordination with the Publishing Service and other DCS stakeholders, design and deliver impactful outreach campaigns. Develop clear, engaging messaging and high-quality material such as briefings, press releases, newsletters, catalogues, presentations, fact sheets, and videos highlighting the work of the Division of Conference Services and the UNON conference centre. Ensure all content is optimised to effectively reach and engage target audiences across multiple platforms. o In close consultation and coordination with the Publishing Services Section strengthen branding and visibility of the DCS services within the UNON compound. o Ensure content and messaging are aligned with UN communication standards and multilingual requirements. o Contribute to consistency and accuracy in messaging and branding across all communication channels. C. Digital Engagement & Outreach: o Support the creation of digital and social media platforms and initiatives to connect and engage with varied audiences. o Update the UNON DCS website and UNON intranet sites with DCS activities and stories in support of the overall Communication Strategy and Outreach of the Division. o Offer advice on innovative digital solutions and coordinate outreach, including joint efforts with UN teams and external partners. o Advise on innovative digital tools to promote DCS services. Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Business Administration, Social Sciences, or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A minimum of fifteen (15) years' responsible work experience in strategy development, marketing or business development, corporate communications, public information, or related area is required. Demonstrated experience in developing successful promotion or marketing strategies is required. Experience in the field of conference management, events and hospitality sector at the international level is desirable Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills at the corporate level and with both internal and external stakeholders is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or a related area is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
