Terms of Reference1. General Background
Digital engagement plays an important role in UNHCR’s response to global shifts in the fields of communication, fundraising, advocacy, and development. Use of digital media platforms helps position UNHCR in Somalia as a knowledge leader, expands outreach and broadens engagement around forcibly displaced and stateless persons’ rights. Effective use of digital channels for communication of UNHCR's key messages, through relevant content, experience, and dialogue, allow individuals to connect directly with other individuals or groups, as well as brands and organizations, thus creating valuable relationships with both online and offline supporters.
UNHCR in Somalia seeks to recruit a Communications Associate – Digital Engagement, so as to more effectively use digital communication platforms that will increase effectiveness of digital brand engagement, fundraising and build corporate partnerships.
2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment
Under the guidance and supervision of the Associate External Relations Officer, the Communications Associate – Digital Engagement will assist UNHCR Somalia Country Office in
1) Development and production of multimedia content to increase media reach & visibility effectiveness.
2) Integrating digital into all aspects of implementation of the Country Communications Strategy in line with the Global Communication and Public Advocacy Strategy.
3. Monitoring and Progress Controls
1. Content Creation
Proactively create editorial content (stories, photos, advocacy images, campaigns, audio, video, infographics, etc.) in cooperation with the External Relations Team and adapt for media pitching, web and social media, posting daily to respective channels.
Adapt multimedia assets from Global Communication Service (GCS) for the local audience.
Deliverables:
Stories, social media posts, videos, images, infographics, photos posted to digital channels.
2. Social Media Management
Maintain a web and social media calendar and content plans of content themes and all upcoming coverage schedules according to the calendar.
Prepare social media packs for flagship events, initiatives, campaigns. Actively engage with online audiences through social media channels.
Deliverables:
Monthly web and social media calendar created and adhered to.
Social media packs prepared for all key events, dates, launches, etc and shared with stakeholders, where appropriate.
Timely responses to messages and comments, monthly reports on levels of engagement.
3. Content Management
Generate and analyze reports on social media/web traffic and KPIs using Google Analytics, Hootsuite, and other social media focused analytics channels.
Ensure key deadlines are met for the dissemination of time-sensitive content.
Deliverables:
Timely updates and monthly reports on improvements and content plans.
Quarterly and yearly reports.
4. Qualifications and Experience
a. Education (Level and area of required and/or preferred education)
At least a bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, social science, communication or a related field.
b. Work Experience
• At least 3 years of experience in journalism and/or writing features for the web;
• Demonstrated experience in maintaining social media accounts, as well as experience with new media executions, preferably with a humanitarian or development organization;
• Knowledge and understanding of local and global digital landscape and trends;
• Experience with graphic design, ability to create designs for digital media purposes in open source graphic design programmes, such as Canva;
• Ability to integrate PR/communication initiatives with social media;
• Experience developing compelling content to generate response from audiences online;
• Experience in reporting on qualitative and quantitative analytics;
• Ability to take quality photographs and basic photo editing skills;
• Previous UN and/or INGO experience in a similar role is highly desirable.
