Terms of ReferenceThe digital age has changed the communications landscape radically in the past decade altering the way we communicate. In line with its Global Communications Strategy, UNHCR Guatemala requires the services of visual thinkers who can support into the development of creative products by using graphic design software and video technologies aligned to the organization communications strategies and content challenges, for publication on its core websites and social media channels and for distribution to media partners. This body of work may include helping transform text-based communications materials into visual graphic design materials, supporting into the production of news and feature packages, assisting the Social Media Officer into the recording of pieces to camera videos, social media edits, aiding the Communications Unit into producing single- or multiple-camera interviews, and other aspects of multimedia and audiovisual assisting requirements. It involves giving support into filming in the field as well as assisting editing. The overarching aim is to support the Social Media Officer into producing timely, accurate and compelling visuals that help UNHCR lead the narrative on forced displacement, generate empathy and mobilize action throughout the different channels.

UNHCR will need the help of the incumbent to gather information for social media contents (e.g. one-pagers gathering, briefing notes, dopesheets coordination for copy production for tweets, posts, descriptions) as well as supporting in social media content scheduling and production.

The contractor will help assisting in the coordination of printed communicational materials and publications (reports, one-pagers, concept notes, briefing notes, calendar, posters, maps, brochures, booklets, leaflets, panels exhibitions), to support UNHCR’s efforts in implementing funded projects, to communicate results and impact.

To do their jobs well, the contractor needs to cultivate a keen understanding of our target audiences including the substantive themes that resonate deeply, help convey messages effectively and support the quality engagement. The contractor also needs to stay connected with current online trends while contributing into the Social Media strategy for UNHCR social media presence on refugees, asylum seekers and forcible displaced people in Guatemala and the Americas region.

Lastly, the contractor must be vigilant about editorial and journalistic standards, attentive to protection concerns and political sensitivities, and focused on communicating successfully with key demographics. It is imperative that they are aware of the technical requirements and restrictions of different platforms and devices, including social media and smartphones.

The Communications Assistant will report to the Communications Officer and will have regular contacts within the office/unit involving exchange of information. S/he will also have limited external contacts on routine matters.

The Communications Assistant will report to the Communications Officer and will have regular contacts within the office/unit involving exchange of information. S/he will also have limited external contacts on routine matters.

All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. Duties
- Collect press-cuttings of articles in national, regional, international and periodicals that pertain to refugee related issues and to the work of the office.
- Compile and maintain the mailing list for press releases, information bulletins, etc and ensure timely despatch of information to media and other interested parties.
- Classify and maintain adequate stock of PI materials and promote sale of merchandise where appropriate.
- Maintain up-to-date the catalogue of PI material and types monthly report regarding sales and stocks for submission to PI at Headquarters in accordance with established guidelines.
- Provide clerical assistance with regard to PI events such as poster campaigns, exhibitions, and public awareness raising events.
- Respond to routine telephone and written enquiries from a variety of sources such as the media, the public, NGOs and government officials etc.
- Maintain PI files up-to-date.
- Have access to UNHCR's communication systems.

- Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. Ensure decision making in risk based in the functional area of work. Raise risks, issues and concerns to a supervisor or to relevant functional colleague(s).
- Perform other related duties as required.
