Org. Setting and ReportingThese positions are located in the Statistics, Data and Digital Service, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Associate Statisticians report to the Head of the Development Statistics Unit in the Statistics Section. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the incumbents will be responsible for the following duties: • Assists in designing, organizing, planning and managing the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data related to measures of broader progress. • Assists in training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information, particularly on Sustainable Development Goals and other broader measures. • Assists in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications by performing methodological research. • Prepares draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports. • Assists in the organization of seminars, working groups and expert meetings, promoting the sharing of good practices. • Guides, trains and supervises general service and professional staff in the function. • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other duties as assigned. Uses time efficiently. EducationAn advanced level university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in statistics, economics, business administration, sociology or related field is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Job - Specific QualificationSuccessful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable. Work ExperienceA minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data on sustainable development is required. Experience in project management is desirable. Experience supporting statistical capacity building efforts of countries is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. French and Russian are desirable or Arabic or Spanish or Chinese (Mandarin) is desirable.
