Your responsibilities
You will become a member of the interdisciplinary target and ion source (SY-STI-RBS) section within CERNs Accelerator Systems Department, bridging across scientific fields such as nuclear physics, atomic physics, ion source and accelerator physics and engineering, ion beam trapping and manipulation, material science, and chemistry. We are looking for an Applied Physicist to to lead ion beam manipulation and trapping techniques for the production and delivery of radioactive ion beams (RIB) produced at CERN-ISOLDE. ISOLDE is a facility dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams for physics research using the isotope separation on-line (ISOL) method.
In this position, you will:
Lead the development of projects including beam delivery from multiple ion sources to experimental end-stations;Drive development of ion beam transport, manipulation and detection techniques including buffer-gas cooling and bunching, magnetic and time-of-flight mass-separation;Take part in the operation of beam delivery systems at ISOLDE;Complement the group's effort of expanding offline infrastructure for beam development and testing.Your profile
Skills and/or knowledge
Experience with ion beam optics, transport and manipulation;Experience with mass-separator and ion trap systems;Experience with ion detection and identification techniques.Advantageous:
Experience with project management and technical coordination would be an advantage.Language skills:
Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.Eligibility criteria:
You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.You have a professional background in Applied Sciences (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.Job closing date: 27.02.2024 at 23:59h (midnight) CET.
