Job Description

Your responsibilities

In this position, you will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the accelerator beam-related technical systems.
More specifically, you'd become part of the the Profile Measurements team (PM) within the Beams instrumentation group (BI) which designs, builds and maintains various classes of instruments devoted to the observation and characterization of the transverse distribution of particle beams.

The team seeks an Applied Physicist or Engineer to contribute to the development, testing, and performance assessment of their monitoring tools.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to build up your expertise in measuring transverse beam size/emittance and beam intensity using various techniques.

Specifically, you will:

Take charge of the commissioning and support the operation of one of our accelerators (LINAC4) RFQ-spare test bench, including the operation of a slit-grid emittance meter for 3 MeV H- beams;Follow up on the design of a new emittance meter for 45 keV H- beams, leveraging your experience gained from the test bench; Study and improve the absolute accuracy of instruments based on secondary electron emission used at the Proton Synchrotron to measure beam intensity;Investigate the dependence of signal response and calibration on vacuum and bias electrodes voltage levels;Apply this knowledge to support the improvement of similar instruments in other experiments.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

Strong knowledge of electromagnetism and the interaction of particles with matter;Experience in data analysis and simulations;Proficiency in coding with Python.

Advantageous:

Experience in developing and/or commissioning beam instruments or other types of accelerator equipment would be an advantage;Knowledge in the field of accelerator physics would be an advantage.

Language skills:

Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. You have a professional background in Applied Physics or Engineering (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
