Purpose of Job

EBRD Star Venture is EBRD’s flagship programme to support entrepreneurship in emerging markets. Through a combination of advisory services, mentorship, blended finance, and ecosystem-building initiatives, Star Venture provides hands-on support to the most promising start-ups and local accelerators in EBRD’s regions.

The Analyst contributes to all phases of the project cycle under Star Venture, including project origination, structuring, execution, implementation and monitoring.

The Analyst will take responsibility for the tasks assigned to them by the Operation Leader or more senior members of the project team, or more senior bankers, which may include undertaking comprehensive due diligence, including financial, market, integrity and EBRD policy compliance, as well as effective post-signing implementation and monitoring. The Analyst contributes to the design and delivery of high-quality start-up advisory support, while also helping to deepen the Star Venture’s links with other EBRD’s early-stage investment activities.

The Analyst carries out these tasks as part of a project team under the guidance of the Operation Leader or under the supervision/guidance of more senior bankers.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Operation Leader or a more senior banker:

  1. Structuring and Execution
    • Work as a project team member on transactions, contributing to all aspects of project structuring and execution, including comprehensive research and analysis of background materials, market information and financial performance data; engage with start-ups, consultants, accelerators and other investors in the start-up space; evaluate potential risks related to the proposed project, including analysis of start-ups’ business models, financials and growth prospects to structure impactful advisory and blended finance support to enhance investment readiness;
    • Assist with the designing and delivery of business development activities to generate a pipeline of high-quality start-ups and advisory projects in priority areas (e.g., digital, green, inclusion, innovation), including through the preparation of terms of reference and internal approval documentation, quantitative and qualitative analysis of investment opportunities, and identification of key market trends within local business ecosystems;
    • As may be requested, assist with communication with country teams and other internal units of the Bank, clients and stakeholders, at the operational level, such as preparing draft correspondence, presentations, and following up on internal emails;
    • Ensure that all tasks assigned to the Analyst are completed within the specified time frames to a high quality and in line with the policies, procedures and objectives of the Bank.
      1. Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation and Reporting
        • As requested by the Operation Leader, undertake assigned tasks relating to the implementation and monitoring of projects to which the Analyst is assigned as part of the project team, including compliance with project agreements and Bank procedures related to monitoring of progress of the project and performance of portfolio start-ups and assessing evolving risk factors;
        • As requested by the Operation Leader or more senior members of the project team, prepare timely and comprehensive draft monitoring reports and include recommendations for corrective actions where required and ensure these corrective actions and recommendations are brought to the attention of more senior team members;
        • As may be requested by, and under the supervision of, a TC Operation Leader, assist with the effective implementation and monitoring of donor funded TC assignments including communication with TC client, monitoring of TC fund usage, preparation and filing of relevant TC progress and completion reports to support the TC operation leader to meet donor reporting requirements and operational objectives relating to Star Venture activities. Contribute to the preparation of new donor proposals required for Star Venture fundraising;
        • Under the guidance of the Operation Leader, assist with business development activities, such as introductions to founders, accelerators, advisors, and other relevant stakeholders, and contribute to the development of innovative ideas for financial and non-financial products for start-ups.

          The responsibilities of the Analyst are designed to allow the Analyst to progressively undertake more complex tasks and build the scope of responsibilities based on acquired experience and expertise.

          Qualifications & Skills / Experience & Knowledge

          Qualifications and Skills:

          • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience in the areas of expertise.
          • Professional qualification such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA desirable.
          • Quantitative/numerical skills are critical with the ability to interpret financial information and to design and use financial models.
          • Credit analysis skills, with the ability to interpret accounts, understanding local and international accounting principles and practice of credit analysis.
          • Strong project management and organisational skills, with ability to operate in a multi-stakeholder environment.
            • Computer literacy, conversant with Microsoft Office and spread sheet packages including financial analysis and modelling modules.
            • Strong writing skills, experience in writing project proposals, terms of references or investment memos.
            • Ability to work effectively as a team member and to meet deadlines under time pressure.
            • Good written and oral communication skills in English.
            • Good command over the local/country language is an advantage.

              Experience & Knowledge:

              • Relevant professional experience in start-up acceleration, venture capital, investment banking, private equity, consulting or a related field.
              • Strong understanding of start-up ecosystems, venture financing, and innovative support mechanisms for early-stage businesses.
              • Experience working with start-ups and interacting with key stakeholders (e.g. accelerators, VCs, corporate VCs, etc.).
              • Knowledge of and/or experience working in at least one of EBRD’s strategic startup priority areas (i.e. green economy, economic inclusion, fintech, sustainable supply chains, SME digitalisation), as well as familiarity with market trends in these areas desirable.
                • Involvement in extracurricular activities such as entrepreneurship, hackathons, etc. is an asset.
