Result of ServiceThrough these services, UNEP FI will establish a robust, scalable data ecosystem that directly supports its Net-Zero Initiatives while also providing tangible benefits for a broad range of climate-related programmes. The Net-Zero Data and Digital Analyst will support the implementation of a dynamic data mart and associated digital infrastructure that: • Enhances Decision-Making and Benchmarking: Empower UN-convened alliances secretariat to accurately assess and benchmark the sustainability performance of financial institutions and related stakeholders. • Facilitates Evidence-Based Policies and Strategies: Robust data analytics and advanced visualization techniques will enable UNEP FI and its partners to derive actionable insights, monitor progress, and optimize strategies towards achieving net-zero targets. This in turn fosters transparency and accountability across the financial sector. • Broadens Outreach and Collaborative Impact: While the primary focus remains on Net-Zero Initiatives, the developed data mart will be strategically leveraged to serve other climate-related initiatives. This cross-functional component will promote knowledge sharing and drive collaborative efforts across diverse stakeholders. Ultimately, the services provided will enable UNEP FI not only to elevate the precision and impact of its sustainability measures but also to catalyse a broader engagement with global climate initiatives, reinforcing its leadership in the transition towards a net-zero future. Work LocationWorking remotely Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers and investors. For over 32 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI requires a Net-Zero Data and Digital Analyst to support the climate team in designing, sourcing, structuring, and analysing climate-thematic data to deliver accurate and impactful outputs across its programmes. The role will capture, research, and translate requirements for science-based metrics—such as absolute emissions evolution, sectoral emissions intensities, transition planning, and adherence to other guidelines—into a comprehensive data strategy. Ultimately, the role also involves supporting digital initiatives that best serve programme team members while ensuring adherence to industry best practices. The consultant is expected to support, inform, and, where applicable, develop the following practices: • Data Architecture Design: Requirements gathering, blueprint creation, and technology stack selection. • Data Sourcing: Identification and aggregation of internal and external data sources, development of robust data ingestion processes, and ensuring data quality. • Data Governance: Formulation of policies and standards, assignment of data stewards, and vigilant attention to data security, privacy measures, and regulatory compliance. • Data Modelling: Development of conceptual, logical, and physical data models along with the implementation of effective version control. • Data Visualization & Analytics: Deployment of visualization tools, enabling self-service analytics, incorporation of advanced analytics techniques, and continuous performance monitoring and optimization. • Documentation & Library: Creation of comprehensive documentation and ongoing maintenance of a library for metrics, data points, and data source references. • Metadata Management & Data Cataloguing: Maintenance of a centralized data catalogue with clear definitions, robust data lineage, and contextual information for each asset. • Lifecycle Management & Change Control: Establishment of policies for data retention, archiving, and effective version control to manage data pipelines and models. • User Training & Collaboration: Facilitation of training sessions, promotion of data literacy, and establishment of communication channels to gather continuous feedback between teams. Objectives: o Support the development and implementation of a robust climate data strategy and related digital infrastructure that aligns with UNEP FI’s Net-Zero Initiatives. o Translate science-based metrics requirements into actionable insights supporting climate and sustainability programmes. Specific tasks and responsibilities: • Design & Strategy: Finalize the data architecture blueprint and translate science-based metric requirements (e.g., absolute emissions evolution, sectoral emissions intensities, transition planning) into an actionable data strategy. • Data Development: Identify, integrate, and manage internal/external data sources, develop ETL/ELT processes, and build robust data models and analytics frameworks. • Digital Integration & Visualization: Develop and deploy interactive dashboards and visualizations to facilitate actionable insights for the climate team. • Governance & Documentation: Implement data governance frameworks, maintain a centralized metadata catalogue, and create comprehensive documentation along with a data library for ongoing reference. • Collaboration & Training: Engage with stakeholders and programme team members, conduct knowledge-transfer sessions, and consistently monitor team satisfaction to ensure optimal service and continuous improvement. Output Expectations: o Timely delivery of design documents, data pipelines, models, dashboards, and comprehensive documentation. o Seamless integration of data processes with ongoing digital initiatives and climate programmes.
