Under the overall guidance of the Area Urban Planning Expert and the direct supervision of the Urban Information Management Expert, the GIS Associate assists in gathering GIS data, updating Data Platforms, analyzing satellite imagery, mapping, data collection, and spatial analysis, preparing training materials, and planning and organizing GIS capacity development activities. Assist in preparing timely GIS reports as per guidelines Support the interactive activities related to the urban Recovery frame (in Aleppo and Jableh cities) developing participatory neighborhoods/ municipal/ cities maps, and moderating dialogue sessions, field visits, and similar when required.


  Duties and Responsibilities
 
Assist in preparing timely GIS reports as per guidelines.  Liaising and communicating with stakeholders on GIS issues Work closely with UN-Habitat partners on data management, and GIS related matters using various GIS software packages (ArcGIS family/ESRI, AutoCAD/ Autodesk and Google Earth). Assist in updating UN-Habitat Data Platforms including GIS/Mapping portals, by updating GIS baseline with data gathered by partners. Implementation of multi-sectoral field assessment projects to develop recovery plans for urban areas. Assist in data entry and development of data entry templates. Assist in analyzing satellite imagery including damage assessment and assist in preparing analysis and methodology reports. Assist in mapping, data collection, and spatial analysis in support of ongoing urban profiling activities. Support to GIS-related mapping and analysis as required for UN-Habitat, such as technical, field project documents, and measurements. Assist in Developing 4Ws Maps (ex. who does what, where) using GIS maps. Carrying out the targeted exercises for workshops related to GIS, satellite image treatment, and related applications. Assist in preparing training materials (Presentations, questionnaires, and maps) and printing and organizing the materials for workshops and technical meetings. Mapping supporting operational projects (Housing and infrastructure, environment, cultural heritage, solid waste). Providing technical, logistical, and administrative support for the implementation of workshops Assist in planning and organizing GIS capacity development activities for UN-Habitat staff and counterparts. Any other related task as requested by the supervising officer. Performing administrative duties as required

  Required Skills and Experience
 

Education:

High School Diploma Or, A First-level University degree (i.e. bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or any related field.

Experience:

At least 6 years (High School) or 3 years (Bachelor) of progressively responsible experience in geographic information management and analysis in urban contexts is required. Familiar with GIS (Esri products/ ArcGIS Desktop 10.XX) is an asset. Advanced experience in dealing with spatial data at the local level (city, neighborhoods) is highly desirable. The ability to deal with spatial data sources that do not have a unified spatial reference (a set of National or UTM coordinates) is an advantage.

Language Requirements:

Proficiency in Arabic and good knowledge in English are required.
