About this position

We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated architect or engineer to join our team, focusing on housing and social infrastructure projects with an emphasis on sustainability and green building practices. The chosen candidate will play a crucial role in mainstreaming sustainability initiatives.

As part of the contractual responsibilities, you will provide specialized technical support to enhance the sustainability of projects. This includes implementing mitigation and adaptation measures such as energy efficiency, water conservation, and a transition to non-renewable energy sources. Your role will also involve promoting resilience within the projects.

Furthermore, the contractual will actively contribute to the dialogue aimed at enhancing the sustainability of social infrastructure in the region. Ensuring alignment with the Paris Agreement will be a key aspect of your responsibilities.

Within our organization, you will be a part of the Social Infrastructure Group (GIS, for its abbreviation in Spanish), which falls under the Infrastructure and Energy department (INE). This team is dedicated to offering technical assistance in the planning, architecture/engineering, procurement, and coordination of construction works for the social infrastructure components of projects across various IDB departments. These projects span sectors such as education, health, social protection, security, tourism, and housing. The overarching goal is to foster the development of sustainable, resilient, and innovative social infrastructure throughout the region.

What you’ll do:

  • Assist the Team Leader during the project preparation phase by actively participating in planning and outlining the social infrastructure component, including defining indicators and verification modes.
  • Provide expert guidance and technical input to project teams and GIS members to incorporate sustainable design criteria, focusing on green building practices to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change impacts during the preparation phase.
  • ·Develop architectural and engineering guidelines for designing environmentally efficient new structures and retrofitting existing buildings.
  • Monitor the implementation of commitments related to green building made during the preparation phase for all GIS-supported projects.
  • Produce comprehensive background studies, presentations, and technical documents that contribute to the Green Building Agenda. Additionally, organize webinars and dissemination events.
  • Collaborate with other areas and Divisions of the Bank to create workshops, documents, and guidelines aimed at advancing sustainable infrastructure practices.
  • Contribute to the collection, dissemination, documentation, and analysis of lessons learned in both social infrastructure and green building initiatives.
  • Update the GIS Green Building Excell database.
  • Actively promote and engage in collaborative efforts with other areas and divisions of the IDB, with a particular focus on cooperation with CCS/CSD.
  • Organize and actively participate in missions, seminars, and other activities as requested by INE.

    What you'll need

    • Education: Master’s in architecture or engineering. Master´s in bioclimatic design, green architecture or similar. Leed, EDGE or similar certification is preferable.
    • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in operations/projects that includes social infrastructure, buildings, urban development in Latin American and Caribbean countries Experience in planning, coordination and construction of architectural works, including experience in the design and construction of social infrastructure projects (schools, medical centers, hospitals, etc.). Experience in the design and execution of projects and loans, preferably financed by international development agencies. Experience in bioclimatic design and certification systems for buildings. Proficiency in Excell is required.
    • Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

        • Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries.
        • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
