This internship opportunity is located in the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) within UNDSS. ERU provides rapid, effective and specialised on the ground and remote support to UNDSS offices during sudden onset and complex emergencies to ensure the continuation of critical UN operations and programmes. The Intern will be assisting in the management of the UNDSS surge via the Standing Surge Capacity – a new framework that maintains a pool of skilled security staff who can rapidly deploy on temporary duty assignments in response to critical or escalated situations. The duration of the internship is for a period of three (3) to six (6) months, depending on the needs of the Department. The internship is UNPAID and is designed to be in-person and full-time. Interns work five days (35 hours or more) per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. Depending on the situation of the successful candidates, the internship may also be conducted remotely and/or in part time upon request of the successful candidates. Within assigned authority, the Intern is expected to undertake the following duties: • Assists in the engagements with UNDSS field offices during sudden onset and complex emergencies to organise a tailored and timely “second wave” surge support. • Provides support to ongoing Standing Surge Capacity deployment processes. • Provides support to ongoing Standby Partnership Programme processes. • Assists in preparing for meetings with partners, clients, other entities, Departments, etc. to advance the UNDSS Standing Surge Capacity implementation. • Contributes to data entry, updating database and SharePoint and programme related documents. • Assists in editing and revision of reports, briefs and other documents as needed. • Assists in drafting correspondence, reports, agenda, feedback and presentations. • Assists with preparation and dissemination of materials including meeting notes, follow-up action points and reports. • Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above). Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office 365) and be able to produce well-formatted, high-quality PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, and Excel workbooks. Applicants must speak and write clearly and effectively while tailoring language, tone, style and format to match the intended audience.
