Internship Assignment

Background:

  • Be a key member of and provide operational and administrative support to the ​Strategic Investment Partnerships and Co-Investments (DSCI) team;​
  • DSCI is a new department that has been set up to develop new investment partnerships and co-investment structures in order to drive innovative and transformative climate finance deals;
  • DSCI will help to catalyze capital from both traditional and non-traditional sources encompassing the full range of the private and public sectors;
  • DSCI operates in in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment with a “can-do” attitude driving new and creative structures, including first of its kind climate finance structures/ frameworks;
  • DSCI offers the Intern an exciting and unique opportunity to contribute towards driving higher flows of financing to address the climate challenge;
  • The Intern will operate at the cutting edge of what will help define climate finance in the times to come;
  • The Intern will have the opportunity to learn and expand her/ his experience by providing support in the research, review, analyses and assessment of potential partners/ co-investors and investment structures;
  • The Intern will also assist with both strategic and operational activities;
  • Strategic activities will include actively scouting the landscape for landmark climate finance transactions and defining the catalytic role GCF can play in these transactions
  • Operational activities will include analysing and preparing quantitative and qualitative data on potential structures;
  • The Intern will also assist with coordinating and helping to plan events, including meetings, investment conferences, forums and roadshows in support of DSCI’s messaging, outreach and marketing efforts to enhance GCF’s profile and effectiveness in climate finance; and
  • Supervised primarily by a Manager, but on a day-to-day basis, work directly with each of the team members of DSCI;

    Key responsibilities:

    • Under the overall guidance of the designated primary and alternate supervisors within DSCI, the Intern/s will be expected to:
    • Support the DSCI team in mapping out the climate finance landscape and in identifying potential attractive and untapped opportunities that can be developed;
    • Conduct research and assess potential partners, including for example financial, strategic, and advocacy institutions that align with and could support GCF’s climate mission;
    • Support the DSCI team in undertaking sectoral research in identifying investment opportunities;
    • Support the development and management of a database/ CRM for all potential partners, ensuring accurate records of discussions and meetings;
    • Assist in the development of proposals and the structuring of financial deals, with a focus on investment analysis and structuring;
    • Perform detailed financial modelling and analysis of potential investment structures;
    • Assist DSCI team members in structuring and commercial negotiations, externally and internally, to the extent required;
    • Support other members of the team with market outreach, including preparing pitch presentations that effectively communicate complex situations;
    • Assist DSCI team to ensure timely and collaborative interactions with other relevant teams in GCF with respect to potential co-investment structures and partnerships; and
    • Deliver on any other task assigned to the Intern from time to time.

      Requirements and qualifications

      • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Master’s or PhD program with 2-3 years or more of work experience in investment banking (IB), private equity (PE), or a related financial field;
      • Strong analytical skills and experience in financial modelling and deal structuring, with the ability to analyze complex financial data and present it in a clear and concise manner;
      • Proven experience in preparing presentations to explain complex situations to various audiences;
      • Proficiency in using standard software programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access);
      • Experience with carrying out detailed research;
      • Prior emerging market / developing country and / or climate experience is not essential, but will be a strong advantage;
      • Strong quantitative, writing, and presentation skills;
      • Must be highly collegiate and collaborative;
      • An entrepreneurial mind-set is highly desirable; and
      • Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of another United Nations language is an advantage.
