Work LocationHomebased Expected duration9 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesAbout UN-Habitat UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production center of the UN- Habitat that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practices and is the operational level responsible to undertake technical cooperation projects, such as the construction of water and sanitation facilities, shelter and other work. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section (PFES) is responsible to support urban and territorial planning at all scales including through the development of planning policy, norms and guidelines, urban design and public space design, urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance), and local economic development. In doing so, the consultant contributes to the implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on the Young Gamechangers Initiative (YGI) and Youth 2030 Phase 2 projects. Reporting and communication The Consultant will be under the overall leadership of the Young Gamechangers’ programme manager. Duties and responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Programme of the Young Gamechangers Initiative, the consultant will be responsible for the following duties: • Assessing and Enhancing Youth Engagement: Continuously evaluating governance, digital engagement, and inclusive public spaces with a particular focus on young women, and developing strategies to enhance youth participation in these areas across different countries. • Mentoring and providing training to the YGI evidence-gathering teams, while also co-designing research methodologies and tools that align with youth-centric planning and policy development. • Developing comprehensive research frameworks that address youth and governance, alongside contributing to the design of educational curriculums that support the initiative's goals. • Collaborating with youth advisors to create and implement tools for benchmarking and monitoring the well-being and health of young people, ensuring these measures contribute to the broader objectives of the YGI. • Offering mentorship to graduate students and planners engaged in research and policy-making related to youth, sustainability, and impact measurement, thereby facilitating the production of valuable research reports and policy briefs for the initiative. Qualifications/special skillsAcademic Qualification Advanced university degree in public policy and management, social sciences connected to the fields of creativity and innovation, international development, urban studies or related subjects is required Experience At least two (2) years of experience working in the field of innovation/creativity in the area of sustainable development and youth policy is required Experience working in city systems and planning roles is desirable Experience in monitoring, evaluation, research, and youth focussed training is desirable Experience and knowledge of young people, health, well-being and research is required Excellent research skills are an added asset LanguagesEnglish and French are the working knowledge of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage. Additional InformationNot available.
