Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationship
The position of Senior Nutrition Specialist is assigned in the Human and Social Development Sector Office (SD3-HSD) within the Sectors Department 3 (SD3). SD3 aims to deliver impactful sector initiatives and integrated solutions that advance ADB’s strategic agenda in human and social development (HSD), finance, and public sector management and governance in the region and with ADB’s clients. SD3, which comprises three sector offices, delivers or supports sovereign, nonsovereign, and advisory operations; delivers knowledge services; supports regional departments (RDs) and resident missions (RMs) in engaging with developing member countries (DMCs); and ensures ADB’s technical leadership externally and internally.
SD3-HSD leads policy dialogue, initiatives, and solutions in the human and social development sectors (education, health, and social protection) and in broader social development initiatives as relevant. SD3-HSD is responsible for: (i) conceptualizing, processing, and administering lending, grant, and technical assistance (TA) operations; (ii) developing and delivering knowledge services and products to DMCs; and (iii) leading technical work on sector diagnostics and road maps and contributing to business development efforts.
You will be based at our Headquarters in Manila, Philippines.
You will report to the designated Director, SD3-HSD or the Senior Director and will oversee junior staff.
The selected candidate will be appointed with the title, “Senior Social Development Specialist (Nutrition)”.
Your Role
This position will require relevant experience and proven ability of undertaking both, thematic and project work pertaining to nutrition, cutting across social protection, health, and education. As a Senior Nutrition Specialist, you will keep track of the latest development research and evaluations on how nutrition sensitive outcomes (e.g., reducing the incidence of child malnutrition, stunting, wasting, and rising obesity levels) can be supported through social protection, health, and education programs and projects. You will work with HSD colleagues who are designing and implementing projects and technical assistance, assess the development context, and then suggest cost-effective ways of designing and implementing nutrition sensitive components as elaborated below. You will also help develop pipelines in the DMCs by conceptualizing projects and co-leading missions in your areas of expertise.

Master’s degree or equivalent in nutrition, health, food science or other related fields; or a University degree and at least 5 years of specialized experience relevant to the position can be considered At least 10 years of relevant professional experience of working on social protection and nutrition programs including design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. International experience in several countries, preferably in the Asia and Pacific region. Experience in conceptualizing, processing, and implementing projects (i.e., loans, grants, TAs) in the above-mentioned technical areas. Ability to deal sensitively in multi-cultural environments and build effective working relations with clients and colleagues in a complex and politically sensitive environment. Strong team building skills and ability to lead and motivate teams (coaching and mentoring) and resolving conflicts within and across teams. Demonstrated willingness to seek out and acquire new knowledge to contribute to his/her work program, as well as having the interest and ability to communicate and present information and ideas in a clear, organized fashion to others. This appointment is open to internal and external applicants.
This is a fixed term appointment with option to renew, initially for a period of up to 3 years, or up to the Normal Retirement Date (NRD), whichever comes earlier, for the purpose(s) and conditions determined by ADB, in accordance with Administrative Order No. 2.01 (Recruitment and Appointment). After the initial fixed-term period, ADB may choose to renew the appointment for up to an additional 3 years or not renewed. This decision will be made in the overall interest of ADB, based on factors including but not limited to the requirement of Staff’s particular blend of skills and experience for the medium-term work program of the organizational unit, sufficient funding to cover the renewed period, and Staff’s performance and suitability for employment. There is no limit to the number of renewals up to NRD. However, this appointment is not convertible to a regular appointment.
