General Background of Project or Assignment:
Since June 2020, Indonesia has been receiving Rohingya refugees arriving by boat to various cities
and regencies in Aceh Province, with one additional boat arrival in North Sumatera. With 10 new
Rohingya boats arriving in November – December 2023, the current total Rohingya population in
Aceh amounts to more than 1500 individuals spread among seven locations in Aceh and one location
in North Sumatera. Due to deteriorating safety and living conditions in Bangladesh and Myanmar,
more Rohingya refugees are expected to seek asylum in Indonesia in the coming years. Considering
this, UNHCR maintains regular presence in Aceh to conduct various activities, including coordination
with the local government and local NGOs, identification of Specific Needs and registration,
communication with the refugees, protection monitoring and interventions, community basedprotection
activities, conducting Best Interest Assessments for children, and other activities. Many of
these require in-person interpretation to ensure the quality, efficiency, and confidentiality of the
activities.
In light of the above, the Protection Unit requests is opening a roster recruitment of Rohingya
interpreters who can be deployed immediately in response to developing needs in the field.
Duties and Responsibilities
UNHCR is interested to hire qualified interpreter in Rohingya language in combination with English
and preferably Bahasa Indonesian. Under the direct supervision of Protection Associate in the
Protection Unit, and the overall supervision of the Assistant Protection Officer and Senior Protection
Officer, the incumbent will be joining a roster for potential individual contactors in the following
functional areas:
1. Interpret oral conversations, discussions, and interviews from Rohingya, into English;
2. Support the registration process for new asylum-seekers with interpreting services;
3. Support the other staff members to perform other clerical duties within the Registration Section
with provision of translation and interpreting services;
4. Accompany more senior staff members to travel on missions to field locations for interpreting,
registration and other assistance, as needed;
5. Assist other staff members, with interpreting and translation services, in responding to queries
relating to their area of responsibility;
6. Perform any other duties as required.
Please kindly note that the incumbent who is selected to join the roster will be paid on pro rata basis.
Qualifications/Requirements
Education & Experience: Minimum completion of secondary education with two (2) years’
experience in practising the Rohingya language (for example community interpreters); Experience
working in a multi-cultural environment or international context is an added asset.
Nationality: Citizen of Indonesia; non-citizen with Indonesian permanent residence, or other form of
regulated stay in the country.
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken) and fluency in Rohingya.
Desirable Skills in: Good and sound knowledge of Bahasa Indonesian will be considered as
comparative advantage, Interpreting/translation; communication; computers; ability to work
effectively in a team; professionalism and understanding of high level of ethical standards as an
interpreter in the context of forced displacement.

Interpreter Assistant
Organizational Setting and Work Relationships
The Interpreter Assistant normally report to a higher level local or international staff. The incumbent supports the operation with translation and interpretation related activities.
All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. Duties
- Interprets and/or translates from newspapers, written reports, magazines etc.
- Interprets oral conversations, discussions and interviews especially when attending meetings with high ranking officials, diplomats and others.
- Travels with international staff on their missions to the field for interpretation and other assistance, as needed.
- Arranges meetings, both internal and external, some involving high-ranking officials and takes minutes/notes.
- Meets official personnel at the airport and facilitates immigration and customs formalities.
- Responds to queries relating to the area of responsibility.
- Support the identification and management of risks and seek to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. Ensure decision making in risk based in the functional area of work. Raise risks, issues and concerns to a supervisor or to relevant functional colleague(s).
