The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) seeks to hire a Research Officer III – Small Ruminant Nutritionist who will serve as a specialized research and technical expert in Animal Nutrition. The incumbent will be responsible for leading, managing and coordination of advanced national research programs related to Feeds & Forages. This role will provide technical expertise to drive innovation and improve small ruminant production systems through sustainable livestock management practices, policies, and technologies. It will involve supervising research teams, managing resources and knowledge dissemination.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and oversee the implementation of Small Ruminant Nutrition national research programs aligned with CGIAR initiatives and programs, and national development priorities. Identify emerging challenges and opportunities in the national Small Ruminant Nutrition sector and formulate innovative research strategies to address them. Lead the planning, coordination and management of multiple national Feeds & Forage research projects, evaluating their progress and impact, and preparing detailed reports for stakeholders. Conduct advanced data analysis to interpret research results and produce comprehensive reports, technical papers, and publications. Represent ICARDA in national and international forums, to share findings and insights. Provide advanced evidence-based technical guidance in Small Ruminant Nutrition and management practices, to inform livestock management strategies and national policy development. Lead and mentor Small Ruminant Nutrition researchers, technicians, and support staff, fostering professional growth and collaboration. Organize training programs, workshops, and seminars to build capacity in Small Ruminant Nutrition research and management. Collaborate and foster partnerships with research institutions, government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and community groups to influence policies and programs in the Small Ruminant Nutrition sector. Contribute to research funds mobilization through grant applications, partnerships, and collaborations to support research activities.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

MSc degree in Animal Nutrition or Veterinary Science from a recognized University. Broad / specialized knowledge of methods, techniques and processes

Experience:

At least seven years relevant experience in developing countries, proven experience conducting and leading applied livestock research. Experience working in an animal nutrition laboratory. A good knowledge on scaling approaches of animal nutrition or related technologies

Skills:

Familiarity with research protocols and ethical standards in animal research. Strong analytical skills, with experience in essential data quality control and data analysis. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities, with a track record of successful collaboration in multi-disciplinary teams

Position level: HG 15

Minimum Base salary:

Birr 71, 122 per month

Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position with the Initial appointment of one year renewable appointment based on performance and funding availability. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus with dining and sports facilities that are located on site.
