CIFOR-ICRAF
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) envision a more equitable world where trees in all landscapes, from drylands to the humid tropics, enhance the environment and well-being for all. CIFOR and ICRAF are non-profit science institutions that build and apply evidence to today’s most pressing challenges, including energy insecurity and the climate and biodiversity crises. Over a combined total of 65 years, we have built vast knowledge on forests and trees outside of forests in agricultural landscapes (agroforestry). Using a multidisciplinary approach, we seek to improve lives and to protect and restore ecosystems. Our work focuses on innovative research, partnering for impact, and engaging with stakeholders on policies and practices to benefit people and the planet. Founded in 1993 and 1978, CIFOR and ICRAF are members of CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food secure future dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources. CIFOR-ICRAF is looking for a
Research Officer – Agroforestry Modelling and Database
Overview
Under the guidance of the Research Officer – Agroforestry Socio-Ecological Impact, the Research Officer – Agroforestry Modelling and Database will lead research activities related to agroforestry modelling in many aspects of CIFOR-ICRAF’s work. These activities include developing data collection methods, organizing data collection, analyzing data, conducting ex-ante analyses of productivity and ecosystem services of agroforestry systems, maintaining the existing tree-crop-interaction simulation model (R-WaNuLCAS), contributing to project reports, and publishing research results to a broader audience. The Research Officer will also contribute to the Ques-B (biodiversity) module application on Land Use Planning for Multiple Environmental Services (LUMENS) in the form of conducting ex-ante analyses for ecosystem services at the landscape level.
The Research Officer will also develop and maintain research databases within the team, including databases on farmers, tree species, biodiversity, wood density, demonstration plots data, and behavioural changes. The Research Officer will also serve as the primary back-end operator for the COSAM Android-based application, which supports farmers in co-designing agroforestry management and engages in capacity-building activities related to agroforestry systems.
Duties and responsibilities
1. Scientific research
Conduct research activities related to biophysical studies, including tree-soil-crop interactions, to understand the growth and productivity of agroforestry systems and their environmental impacts (water balance, nutrient balance, biodiversity, carbon stocks, and greenhouse gas emissions) through both actual and ex-ante analysis approaches, e.g., using the R-WaNuLCAS, Ques-B on LUMENS, or other models.
Conduct primary and secondary data collection, including designing the data collection methods.
Leading data tabulation, analysis, and interpretation to generate a study summary.
2. Data management and model maintenance
Developing database structure and platform; and management for research results collected through developing agroforestry demonstration plots.
Developing the database structure and platform; and managing the agroforestry farmers' database involved in CIFOR-ICRAF Indonesia project activities.
Revitalization and maintenance of existing databases within the team, e.g., carbon stock, biodiversity, wood density, tree species, and soil.
Maintaining monitoring and evaluation data on establishing agroforestry demonstration plots in agroforestry projects and behaviour changes conducted by the CIFOR-ICRAF Indonesia Country Program.
Support COSAM Android-based application development by updating the database structure, testing and revision, and updating the user manual.
Maintaining the existing tree-crop-interaction simulation model (R-WaNuLCAS): model development, improvement, and documentation.
3. Project activities management and stakeholder engagement
Develop and manage budgets for research activities to ensure the efficient use of resources.
Ensure timely implementation of research activities by managing project activities timelines, deliverables, and reporting requirements.
Engage and collaborate with key stakeholders, including government agencies, universities, and partner institutions, to facilitate research activities. This includes developing Terms of Reference (TORs) for events, workshops, and stakeholder communications.
